The Strange Allure of the Progressive Insurance Girl (The One You Mute)

"Flo"

Stephanie Courtney

She's bubbly and beaming, high-volume, with a flip of dark hair and a face like a lollipop. She irks as she endears, bemuses as she bewitches. She's a bundle of energetic contradictions, bursting here, retracting there. Her expressions blink and change like a neon sign. Her eyes are popping globes. And she just sold you a bunch of car insurance.

Flo is her name. She's the spokeswoman for Progressive Auto Insurance, lighting up televisions in a series of commercials in which her perky cashier pitches the money-saving merits of Progressive to customers. She works in a sterile, all-white big-box store, and her florid makeup stands out like paint spilled in snow.

First she caught our eye; now she's snatched our heart. Viewers are smitten. They're crushin'. They want to know: Who's that girl?

From a recent blog at HoustonPress.com, with the headline "The Cult of the Progressive Car Insurance Chick":

"Am I the only one completely and totally enamored of the woman in the television ads for Progressive car insurance? You know, the ones starring that babelicious brunette named Flo with her 'tricked-out name tag' and her '60s style eye makeup and her kissable red, red lips?"

No, sir, you are not. There's more where that mash-note came from, out there in the blogosphere's infinite confessional space: "She's hot." "She's weird but, God, she's fine!"

Compared to the Susan-Collins look-alike selling diabetic med, Flo’s bearable.

She’s creepier than the Burger King.

You guys gotta be kidding me! She doesn’t make me wanna run out and buy Progressive insurance, but Flo rocks! There’s just something about her. VanDeKoik gets it.

You know how we’re always hearing about declining sperm counts in Western men and associated emasculation? Well, threads like this seem to provide evidence for that reality. The answer we should be seeing by guys in this thread is “Yeah, those commercials are annoying and that girl wears too much lipstick, but I’d still nail her.” Any other answer is an indication of an unnatural decline in healthy male libido. Unless your wife is peering over your shoulder as you type, in which case, of course you find her unattractive!

As I pointedly note to my wife?

“It’s nice this gig got her off the street for a while...”

Yes, I really find their commercials that despicable. Right up there with Burger King, the Lizard, the Caveman...

For me, I think it’s the the clinical whiteness of the set of the commercials. Calls to mind things like euthanasia, forced sterilizations, etc. associated with the Progressive movement. In another context, I doubt I’d find Flo as troubling.

Feh.

Erin E-surance is way hotter.

And she’s a cartoon.

A former coworker would occasionally comment about certain females,
"...fun to be with, but not for the long haul!"

And I believe he'd say that about Flo...

This is one of the best gigs possible for an actress that didn’t break into the inner circle. She will be recognized more than most in Hollywood, works consistently (until the unthinkable) and has a character people love or hate. I loved someone’s earlier comment about their 18 month old running to the TV when she comes on. Great gig, good choice on character...

Compare that to the current bad gig...

“Bloating...gas...indigestion”
“Hey aren’t you the colon lady?”
“That’s me, the Colon Lady!”

GAG

And what role is June Alison remembered for?

Flo is the current Madge. But cuter!

So, what would her and the Burger King’s child be like?

I just saw her on a Farrelly movie with Ben Stiller. Heartbreak Kid. I thought it was funny in a mindless sort of way...

“I like the Geico gecko, but can’t stand the stack of money with the eyes.”

You and me both. That’s one of the more annoying concepts to come down the advertising pike in a long time.

I agree.
