Toy Gun Sold in U.S. Can Easily be Converted to the Real Thing

“The airsoft can be converted to an AR-15,” firearms manufacturer Leo Gonnuscio told FoxNews.com after testing the make and model of airsoft guns seized by the ATF.

Having concluded that several other airsoft guns could not be converted to fire real ammunition, Gonnuscio said he was surprised to find that he was able to to transform this particular gun to the real thing -- and with “minimal work,” because its bottom half, or “receiver,” is so similar to an AR-15's.

To make the airsoft receiver function just like an AR-15’s, Gonnuscio said, “All you have to do is drill one hole.”

“The cost of buying the Taiwan-made airsoft gun and all the parts needed to convert it to an AR-15 comes to roughly $1,100 — more than the cost of some real AR-15s. But someone who can’t clear a background check or has been refused a gun for any other reason could use this method to make his own lethal weapon, Gonnuscio said.”

If a person cannot legally own a firearm they are not going to go through that much trouble when they can buy it on the black market.

I think it is BS, too, but this particular Airsoft rifle has a lower receiver made of zinc.

Okay, I remember now. You can buy receivers less than 80% without going through an FFL.

Machine work done but you have to drill your own holes and install everything else.

I believe that you are correct. From what I have been told by builders most of the remaining work is drilling the proper holes.

If they’re saying that you could lash together a real upper with the toy lower, put a 5.56mm round into the real upper’s chamber, charge the handle and the toy lower would somehow hold the bolt back until the trigger is pulled - once - then maybe. But honest-to-god functioning, no.

If that's all they're after, a suitably-sized rectangular block of wood could be a "firearm". Use it to pull back the striker on a Glock slide assembly and wedge it between the striker and the back of the recoil spring. If one has removed the striker safety, pushing up on the slide assembly so the striker slides off the block should fire the gun. Not that I'd want to be around when someone did that.

ATF seizes 30 toy guns, infuriating local business owner

ATF lawlessly seizes toy AirSoft Guns! (video)

ATF Seizes 30 Toy Guns, Says "They Can Be Converted Into Machine Guns"
(video) Watch the affirmative action BATFE agent try to put the magazine in backwards. This is the video to watch if you watch only one.

The fact that the ATF refuses to release the tests they claim to have, proving the gun can be converted, without a FOIA request tells you all you need to know about their credibility.

Bull

Never believe anything the BATFE says. Remember that poor guy that had his life ruined because of a gummed up AR-15 action?

You are correct. The receivers we were looking at were less than 80%, needed drilled and coated.

Just goes to show that the "good guys" at FNC are still complete blithering idiots when it comes to firearms. Oh yeah, and you'd think that, since we've been at war for almost nine years now, they'd know a thing or two about the military. Yet, their producers/reporters/anchors still can't figure out the rank structure, and don't know the difference between a mortar and a mortar round.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

The comments on the video are against the BATFE. Me personally, I’d love to own one or two of them, different models so I can go to skirmishes.

I have also heard that it’s excellent therapy for returning soldiers.

Yes they are you betcha! They aren't fooling anyone except the willingly gullible. I want to see a BATFE agent convert an airsoft, easily as they say, and then fire a round of .223 through it without any special protection other than standard safety glasses. I want to see video of the surgeon picking bits of plastic out of his face too.

...."I wouldn't use a shotgun shell ZIP Gun"....

I wouldn't either, but I was just showing I could make an illegal gun a whole lot easier than converting a toy. Also, the ignition isn't hard to make reliable. It is a little curious why someone would build a zip gun with all the illegal guns out there, but I'm just sayin, if the crap hits the fan, it could be done. In Texas, anyone can buy a gun from an individual with no background check. A quick look a www.southeasttexas.com will give an idea of what would be available to anyone that was just released from prison. If I drive up to buy a gun from an individual, I could give a false ID or any number of scenario's to purchase a gun and not qualify for one. I can't imagine buying a toy receiver and then buy a legit upper, and then spend all my time trying to mate the 2 parts. A single shot breakdown shotgun is available for around $100 or less almost everywhere. There are plans all over the Internet to build any number of zip guns of various calibers. I guess the BATF just has to find something to occupy their time other than burning women and children.

To pretend we are in danger of criminals making their own guns is about the same as the repeated lie that the drug lords are importing weapons from the US. Why would a drug lord in Mexico buy a AK-47 in Texas for $800 and up when they could get all they want from Hugo Chavez for a couple of hundred bucks. People in Sudan that are starving have an AK-47 for goodness sake. I bet a drug lord that wants 1000 AK's could get them delivered Fed EX for $150 a piece. If you wanted a gold plated .45 with diamonds studs, well, that might come from the US, but most cartel weapons can be purchased anywhere.

When I was a boy, back in the day, zip guns were what most of the gang members were armed with, but they used .22 long rifle ammo, not 12 gauge shells. I could make a muzzle loader that would take out just about anyone I wanted to take out.

This air soft gun is a frickin' joke. The whole idea is promoted by the BATF because they confiscated a bunch of air soft guns at a port about a month ago and have suffered considerable abuse about it since then.

The MSM stands by the frickin' left wing a**holes we have running the government today plus pro-gun legislation has been gaining since Bozo took office. They have to do something to try to stem the tide of freedom. The fickin' Pr**ks.

Only if owning an AR-15 were illegal.

And, it’s not...

Maybe you missed this part:

But someone who can’t clear a background check or has been refused a gun for any other reason could use this method to make his own lethal weapon, Gonnuscio said.

I am surprised that an airsoft gun would have the same fire control parts as a real gun (hammer, trigger etc) since most of them use a piston in an air cylinder to puff out the plastic balls. I’m not sure how a hammer striking the face of the bolt would make an airsoft pellet come out of the barrel. I once had an airsoft MP5, and the trigger was just an electric switch that started a motor. There were no parts inside even remotely resembling those of a real gun.

Yes, that’s a horse of a different color.

I once knew a guy who completed two less than 80% receivers and serial numbered them with images of Ren and Stimpy. It was awesome!

"Of course, all the customers would get blown up but what the hell."

Cash only, no checks.

I find it interesting that the feds have no problem calling these pellet guns "machine guns", but, as per AG holder, can't call radical islamists "radical islamists".
