LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Remember that old song, "How much is that doggie in the window?" For most Americans, it seems it's no sale. More than half of people in an Associated Press-Petside.com poll said they would get their next dog or cat from a shelter, nearly seven times the number who said they would buy their next pet from a store....

Thanks for the laugh and the entertaining way to tell us about how you were chosen.

The stores use puppy mills which are notorious for over breading and creating animals with the genetic defects that causes. So you should only go to the stores if you want an animal that will live half as long as their breed normally does, and will have strange and expensive health problems for the last couple of years.

What a wonderful story! Isn’t it amazing how we are influenced sometimes to just do something we had no intention of doing and not knowing why?

That pic reminds me.....if the Empire had micro-chipped the Ewoks, they could’ve easily defeated them.

It's my 120lb Newfoundland mix that seems to adopt all the
cats at our house. There's one wild one that won't let me
touch him but follows Jack everywhere. I have a place in the
boonies and take the dog with me when I go. This cat will
run out to my Jeep when I return and welcome him back like
a long lost friend.

I believe in shelter dogs all the way, but I was quite surprised to find out how expensive it can be to "adopt" a dog from a shelter.
Our beautiful 2 year old husky/ something mix cost us over $200.00 to adopt. She was worth every single penny, and I would pay that and more again, but it isn't cheap to adopt.

Or showing up in your backyard. Oh wait! That one doesnt always happen? I have three kittehs I adopted because they showed up in the back yard. Folks, I have to tell you this has to be the most expensive way to adopt a kitteh....

Looks a lot like mine, who I got at the shelter. Mine is mildly ‘special needs’, I have to give him some (fortunately inexpensive) liquid medication twice a day. He’s a real fighter/hunter, but he seems to understand that the medication isn’t an assault, and it will be followed by breakfast or dinner.
Great kitty- and a sanity saver for me, as I’m a bit of a hermit.

Hi I reality there is a lot of organization specialized in dog rescue; As
golden retriever rescue of NYC. One of my favourite rescue organization. They provide a better overall health conditions.
