World's biggest beaver dam can be seen from space

This woodland construction is the world's biggest beaver dam, which at 2,790ft is more than twice the length of the Hoover dam and can be seen from space.

The mammals use trees, mud and stone to make a type of moat where they can use their swimming skills to evade any predators.

The families live in lodges on the dams and spend their days adding to and repairing the incredible structures.

The dam was spotted by experts monitoring the size and spread of the beaver dams in North America.

It is located on the southern edge of Wood Buffalo National Park in Northern Alberta, Canada

Flooding disaster in Central Vermont
Adamant Village, Vermont - May 3, 2010

Clean-up efforts are underway in Adamant after flood waters ripped through the village last night.

The flood happened after a beaver dam on a pond burst. At one point the downtown was covered in 4 feet of water.

Fire crews from several surrounding communities responded. Seven homes were evacuated.

Area residents now say most of the damage to homes was relatively minor, but travel in and out of the area is somewhat difficult. The main road through town was washed out. And that road through the village was still closed this morning, but crews are already busy at work dumping gravel onto the road.

Adamant’s famous co-op— thought to be the oldest co-op in New England— was spared. So was the Adamant music school.

When I saw the headline, I knew it had to be in Canada.

It's sad that the people there get upstaged by the wildlife, though.

A couple years back we had a couple beavers who damned up the drainage ditch on the E. side of our subdivision near the entrance which was a wooded area. In the evening I used to walk the street down to that area and sit down and watch them at work along with the little muskrats.......

A neighbor finally called the DNR and complained about them so the DNR came in and trapped them and relocated them and tore up the dam. The complainant was worried about the access road being flooded in the event we had a lot of rain........

FWIW, this dam was right in the middle of a highly dense population of houses and condos........which goes to show you that wildlife can and will adapt to their immediate environments.........

We were hiking and stopped by a pretty stream to rest and a beaver came swimming down stream ...at first we thought it was a dog, it was so HUGE! When we left the park, we told the ranger what we saw. He jumped in his truck and took off to the location saying that he wanted to be sure it was just passing though. He didn't want him to set up housekeeping! The critter was a monster!
