‘River Monsters’ tells the reel story of huge freshwater fish

Jeremy Wade is full of fish stories, only he’s not exaggerating when he describes his latest catch.

Wade is a big-game angler, constantly in search of freshwater monsters that make sharks seem as docile as dolphins.

The host of Animal Planet’s “River Monsters,” Wade plies his skill with heavy fishing equipment and a passion, he admits, that borders on obsession.

“You start off interested in variety, and then it’s always about bigger fish, bigger fish, and I became fairly obsessive I think in my late teens and early 20s,” he says.

The British-born Wade began fishing for carp.

“There was a lot of mystique surrounding them. They were supposed to be hard to catch. But while this was happening, fishing was becoming much more popular generally, and because it was a small country, generally, and more people interested, it became less of an escape.”

He stopped fishing for a time.

“Then I just by chance came across an article about somebody who went to India fishing for a fish called a mahseer,” he said. “And a couple years after that I found myself in India with not much money in my pocket and not much of an idea of what I was going to do.”

What he was going to do was stalk that mahseer as though it were Moby Dick.

Hey! I was wadin’ nekkid in the Amazon...and that’s the critter what swum up m’ wa-zoo when I was a’ peein’.

Last night late, I watched one of his shows on this very subject. There is only one documented case, and he talks to the doctor, shows them removing it, reunites the fish in formaldahyde with the victim. Painful to watch.

I agree. Shooting it after you bring it aboard would be contraindicated.

Oh dear, hope hubby doesn’t see this...he has a strange attraction to giant raging water creature B horror movies. I watched a bit of the giant croc one...and a teeny teeny bit of the enormous shark one...

wait...Tiffany?! As in 80’s remix of I Think We’re Alone Now? That Tiffany? She still hasn’t found a last name? LOL

I gotta admit, that “megashark” movie does intrigue me with its obvious horribleness.

I’ve never even heard of “Tiffany.” Was this person famous?

She was a singer in the late 80’s. She re-did the Tommy James and the Shondells song...was all the rage among the 9-12 yr old girl set at that time...I should know...I was part of that demographic... LOL

I’ve got a 1956 edition of a Naval Institute survival book that claims of other reported incidents of candiru swimming up the urethra of urinating individuals.

I think they said on the show that this was the only "documented" case.
