Fanti and Maggiolo concluded the shroud image was created by a "corona discharge," understood as a radiant burst of light and energy that scorched the body image of the crucified man on the topmost fibers of the shroud's front and back sides, without producing any image on the centermost of its linen fibers.
"Imagine slicing a human hair lengthwise, from end to end, into 100 long thin slices; each slice one-tenth the width of a single red blood cell," writes Daniel Porter, editor of ShroudStory.com. "The images on the Shroud of Turin, at their thickest, are this thin."
Fanti and Maggiolo found the faint image of the face on the reverse side of the shroud contained the same 3D information contained in the face and body image of the crucified man seen on the shroud's front side.

I find the 3D image map the most fascinating aspect of the Shroud. Some skeptics believe that the image was somehow created as the Shroud was wrapped around the head. But this is impossible, because the facial image would be twice as wide as a human face. Wrap a towel around the front of a basketball, unroll it, and observe how wide the image is.
If the image was caused by a burst of radiation, which is where the science points right now, this same difficulty remains.
For the image to provide embedded 3D info (like a terrain map in a 3D program), the Shroud must have been flat and suspended above the Body, if the Body was in a prone position. Then, as the radiation burst forth from the body, the areas closest to the Shroud (like the nose and forehead) would "burn" a stronger image than recessed areas (eye sockets, sides of head), thus encoding 3D information in a 2D form.
It's endlessly fascinating.
The present of former pope declared a moratorium on any more destructive tests, understandably.
I wonder what God's plan is in all of this, but even a synchronous Carbon dating wouldn't be enough to answer all skeptics. And there's no way to prove that it's the burial Shroud of Jesus with absolute certainty --extremely high probability, yes-- but not absolute certainty.
I'm in the extremely probable camp myself, since scientists can't explain the Shroud's origin.
But not this kind of image. It has yet to be replicated.
“I’m in the extremely probable camp myself, since scientists can’t explain the Shroud’s origin.”
I don’t think they can ever prove that the shroud is real.
Except that they fail to prove that it is not real.
Could the shroud be a fake but they are not able to prove that?
In all of science they can’t prove that??
The conceit of man is truely amazing.
Zero Point Field? ...11 demensions? leaking across the 'brams."?
Interesting - had never caught that before. Do you believe the later reports of Thomas being able to put his hands in Jesus’ wounds were possible due to a lessening of the energy at that point?
That is a pretty stupid retort.
Absolutely FASCINATING! Thanks so much for the ping...
How wonderful! Will you ping Swordmaker to your report, so that they can ping the Shroud of Turin list? Thank you, and have a blessed time seeing the shroud!
Have a safe and enjoyable trip!
AMEN! That is always the fear with things like this, is it not — that people will worship the “proof” and forget about the real reason altogether.
bttt
“...this is the juncture where science and the absurd leave one another and people go off the deep end of reality.”
I imagine this is what was said to those who had the good fortune to witness one of Christ’s “signs” and went home to tell their family and friends about it.
I believe in miracles. Christ performed them. He knew some people’s faith needed encouragement and He gave them signs to help them. I believe the Shroud is left here for us as a sign. If you don’t need it, great. If you are one of those who, like Thomas, need proof, then what better proof than a relic of the miraculous moment of the Resurrection? As time marches on, science is catching up to the Shroud and beginning to unlock its mysteries. Those who need scientific proof to believe could be helped by studying the Shroud.
I don’t need the Shroud to believe, but I’m happy it’s here— and I thank God for looking after each one of us and our individual needs.
Am very inclined to agree.
THX THX.
only if it’s worrisome when a guy has a pretty sister
but it’s not a matter of “needing” the shroud to be real in order to believe. It’s just a fascinating spice to the Meat of Life, at best. No means a requirement.
I agree it’s interesting.
And you all can argue and debate all you want.
I’m just sharing my opinion, for what it’s worth. 8^)
Step off. I’m merely expressing my opinion regarding holy relics which SOME people may treat as idols.
You really don’t need to be so dang defensive, unless you are worried of that yourself... I was born and raised Catholic, so I repeat — step off. You’re barking up the wrong tree on this one.
