I live in a gold-mining area, and we have serious problems with arsenic in the groundwater. Residents who use wells often have to buy drinking and cooking water at Walmart.
Arsenic and mercury were medicines in Bolivar’s day, too.

IIRC, arsenic was used, among other things, to treat STDs.
