SpikeTV AK47 vs. AR15 Vanity
April 18, 2010 | Me

Informal poll: SpikeTV is showing a Deadliest Warrior rerun. It has the Taliban vs. IRA. The IRA is testing the AR15 against the Taliban with the AK47. I vote for the AK47. I would like to know what you think.

Actually... the guy was a member of the training cadre...an E-6, or E-7...can't remember... helluva nice guy though. They were all good people. We're going to be working with them again in a couple of weeks. :-)

I've been blistered on hot barrels myself before... once on an AR, and once from an SKS (of ALL things!). The AR was slung behind me and I was listening to somebody speaking to us after a shoot. It was an Armalite A-2 standard model, and I was pulling my left trouser leg UP with the front sight by moving my left leg. When I had the trouser leg up, I figured I'd scratch my leg with the barrel. BIG MISTAKE! The SKS that burned me was me being a dumbass (again!). It smelled hot so I figured I'd just grab it (forward the front sight) and find out if it was hot!... yeah...it was hot alright! It burned a blister right across my hand. Pain is a good teacher. :-)

Now that you mention it, the SF soldier did say something about magazines too...and that they would destroy faulty ones. He said that if the followers and springs were good, they'd remove them, but then stomp the mag body on the ground, to make sure it couldn't be used again.

You're the second person I've heard who doesn't like the ACOG. I have a buddy here in the local area who returned from Iraq about 18 mos ago. He was a Marine Recon type... he hated that ACOGs... but I think it's cause he broke one in such a way that involved a HAZMAT team! He liked the AimPoint Comps better!... so he said. :-)

A bent round lodged in the barrel?! Sheesh... that sounds like a recipe for disaster! I came close to firing a round behind a squib one day in a .45 ACP... but common sense prevailed and I stopped and examined WHY the previous round felt strange. I would imagine that a 5.56mm round lodged in a barrel would NOT be good at all!

Yeah... real bummer about our fishing accident. I'll keep looking for them! :-)

For some interesting history on the introduction of the M16 into USMC service look here:

http://www.jouster.com/saga_of_M16/saga_of_the_m16_part_2.pdf

Personally I have both and like both for what they are. I’ve never had a jamming problem with the AR-15 and am less than impressed with the AK’s accuracy. Take down and clean up of the AK is easier but I’m smarter than tractor so I’ve never had a problem cleaning my AR either. As far as combat experience I’ve got none so I can’t comment on field performance and reliability.

I can tell you with 100% authority that my Garands are much prettier and more fun to shoot than either of these rifles.

The Armalite manual for their M-15 states that you can buff the finish and make it a little glossier than the matt finish provided at the factory. But it seems to me that the stock, factory finish is the perfect oil trap. Since taking the front hand guards off is generally a PITA, we just drip some Hoppes #9 through the vent holes and it dissipates via diffusion over the entire barrel. We do this when we clean them and when we do remove the front hand guards, the barrel is ALWAYS oily. :-) All of my functional weapons are either painted (a few wrapped in ghillie), or have matt finishes on them...except for one which Squantos made me promise I wouldn't paint! :-)

One of my sons has a Mossberg 500 and he SWEARS that it will malfunction after being cleaned (misfeed)! As a result, he doesn't clean it often... it gets oiled, and wiped out... I'm not sure to be honest. He swears it's the truth and it's his shotgun, so I pretty much leave it alone. :-)

Have you all seen "Lock-N-Load" Season 1 Episode 11?... it's about rifles. I think R. Lee Ermey solves this debate ONCE and for ALL. I edited it and uploaded only the pertinent section to -

AK vs AR Debate - SOLVED!

It's about a 63MB download, but I think you'll find it enlightening.

:-)

I’m not going to read 208 replies.

The best weapon is the one with the best shooter attached.

They both have killed hundreds of thousands if not millions of people.

They will both do the job.

I like (own) AR-15s FWIW.

Well, if Gunny can’t solve this issue once and for all, no one can! He did a mighty fine job.

300 Win Mag suggested nanolube .....??

You can buy it direct or on eBay. There's some legal wrangling going on between the inventor of Nano-Lube and the inventor of NanoLube. I consider NanoLube to be the genuine article.

I turn to NanoLube like Joe Workshop turns to WD-40. After I take off about .040" from the back of my Bar-Sto barrel, the last fitting will be done using NanoLube. The end results feel like skating across a perfectly frozen pond using perfectly-sharpened ice skates.

Some times that's exactly what you want, but high-pressure areas (bolt lugs, etc.) I follow up with a bit of high-pressure grease. It gives a slower sensation like skiing on jello. Smooth, silent, and almost like floating, although not as fast an action. I consider the high-pressure grease to be the snot on a perfectly-polished doorknowb.

It’s Gunny’s fault. He was using words your computer didn’t understand.

Odd things, too, because it used a common format. Have you used Windows update to update that machine lately?
