Climategate team were 'guilty of sloppiness - NOT cheating'

The scientists at the heart of the Climategate email scandal were disorganised, poor with figures and naive - but not dishonest, it has been ruled.

An independent inquiry into the work of the University of East Anglia's world-leading global warming unit concluded that the researchers were 'ill-prepared for being the focus of public attention'.

Their record-keeping was not up to scratch and some of the statistical techniques used were out of date.

But their studies into long-term changes in temperature were carried out 'fairly and honestly', the panel chaired by geologist and cross-bench peer Lord Oxburgh found.

The inquiry was set up by the university after hundreds of emails sent by researchers at the UEA's Climatic Research Unit were leaked on the internet.

First revealed by the Daily Mail in November, the files showed scientists plotting how to avoid Freedom of Information requests and appeared to show them discussing how to manipulate data.

Some of the most controversial contained personal attacks on climate change sceptics and one mentioned using a 'trick' to massage years of temperature data 'to hide the decline'.

The seven-member panel analysed at least 11 influential studies published by the CRU over the last 20 years and carried out extensive interviews with the scientists.

OK, I’ll accept sloppyness. The effect is the same. The numbers are flawed.

The scientific method, publication, and valid/real/honest/actual peer review, by unbiased peers, is the only standard for research. If it does not meet this standard it isn’t just about, or almost, or good enough, it is bull$hit!!!!!

To all

Those clowns did things that they would gleefully flunk any student for doing!

Every student that got less then a “A” from them should sue them & East Anglia for academic malpractice.

Sure he (Al Gore) does! He stands to make BILLIONS if he can get this climate Slime passed as law and believe me, every American citizen will pay through the nose because of it. Utility companies are already increasing the rates 15% and this just after they got a raise in hikes not more than 7-8 months ago! You will most defiantly be paying more money for the “privilege” To burn a light or flush the toilet. Heaven help anyone if a pipe busts to the plumbing if they aren’t home-—Gallons of water will cost them a fortune to repay! Water will be treated like liquid gold before long!

No. They were paid handsomely with Big Government grants to lie in support of expanding Big Government control.

LOL, so their fervent defenders on a highly biased panel consider this a DEFENSE for the so-called scientists against charges of dishonesty and incompetence???? Imagine these terms in a letter of recommendation for a supposed "scientist" applying for a basic staff position in any research entity tasked with influencing countless billions of dollars and the lives of billions of people:

"disorganised, poor with figures .... 'ill-prepared for being the focus of public attention' .... Their record-keeping was not up to scratch and some of the statistical techniques used were out of date."

I'd say it's obvious that even on the most favorable account everyone involved should be sacked immediately. How DARE they pretend to be competent to influence all of the leading governments and economies in the world????

One thing they definitely were NOT guilty of: committing science.

I am just saying, in the world of science, confessing to sloppiness should be about as shameful as cheating.
