One of the biggest prominences in years erupted from the sun's northwestern limb yesterday. The massive plasma-filled structure rose up and burst during a ~2 hour period around 0900 UT on April 13th. Observers in Europe had a great view:
Updated: The eruption hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME, movie) into space. The expanding cloud could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field around April 15th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of polar geomagnetic activity when the CME arrives.
Only a glancing blow? When do we get the ‘direct hit!’?
NORTHERN LIGHTS IN THE USA: On Saturday, April 11th, a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth’s magnetic field. The impact caused a G2-class geomagnetic storm and, for the first time this year, ignited auroras over the continental United States. “The lights were bright enough to produce a reflection from the surface of Lake Superior,” says photographer Shawn Malone, who recorded the scene from a beach in Marquette, Michigan:
I wonder if all this Sun Activity is causing the surge in Global Earthquakes as well as the Huge Volcanic Eruption that happened again in Iceland today....
Are we all going to die?
Maybe I won’t wash the car tomorrow.
INCOMING!!!!!....................
They couldn’t have told me before I filed my taxes? I gotted by a boat load of SPF 10000
I was going to mail my check today to the Feds, but I think I will wait until tomorrow....:)
Just think, you can lay out in your basement and get a tan!
Yes, we are all going to die, some day.
Get your tinfoil hats on.
First in years ???
Does this mean I won’t have to send my check to the IRS?
I believe that we get hit periodically, and satellite operators, power grid operators, etc. have SOP for dealing with it.
So long as it leaves my pacemaker alone...
Yes, but only because you've been exposed to dihydrogen monoxide. It has nothing to do with these CMEs.
A-M, A being small, and M being large.
A few years back there was a X class CME (previously thought to be SO LARGE as to not exist.) that went the other way from the earth. We all dodged a bullet on that one...
I wonder what size this CME was?
Tara, do you have a link to the Lk Superior article? I want to send it to my daughter.
Thanks!
Life causes death.
Oh yeah. It’s normal. I still think this sunspot cycle we are in isn’t going to be that great which really would be bad news for the amateur radio operators who work on the DX bands.
