I am a bit confused by the egg-laying. How come she lays eggs that apparently hatch in water, when the African American guy's girlfriend was able to get pregnant by him the human way? They are going to have to explain how a species can be both mammal and not mammal in terms of reproduction -- not just visual effect.

Anna’s eggs were fertilized internally and only laid after a pregnancy. So the males do deposit sperm inside, similarly to human males.
The difference is that Anna decanted a bunch of eggs to develop further outside of her body (because hundreds of babies wouldn’t fit in 9 months), while the human woman simply carries the single child to term for nine months.
A human male might even be able to fertilize an alien female - which may be Anna’s idea for the FBI agent’s son, to make hybrids with her own daughter.
