Homeschoolers: What's your favorite History curriculum?
My Questioning Mind ^ | Today | Me

Hello homeschoolers! I'm in the market for history curriculum. Previously we've done aBeka US History...son is in 5th/6th grade and I am feeling the need for something more comprehensive.

Just for fun, I've ordered the "Drive thru History" Soldiers/Jamestown DVD and love it, but it is hardly a comprehensive curriculum.

What do you currently use or have you used in the past?

I echo your Sonlight History-Geography recommendation.

I am amazed at the way that the reading (aloud or personal) and the history books merge together. Biographies play a central theme in the Sonlight selections. Sonlight highlights characters of good quality that you want to emulate. The Christian experience is especially important in their curriculum.

Blessings.

Sure thing! Tempted to look into the offer myself but it’ll be years before it’s useful (babygirl hits one on Sunday, where does time go?) and I’m trying to cure my packrat tendencies...

(A) embrace your inner packrat, and (B) hey! Don’t you want your kid to be a supergenius like her mom? Start now! Now!

A Patriot’s History of the United States (I created my own curriculum) for one high school year.

I learned a LOT, my self! ;-P

I recommend Veritas Press’s Omnibus curriculum. Over four years it provides what is essencially a survey course in western civilization. I wouldn’t start him on it in 6th grade, however... wait ‘til 8th or 9th grade.

Isn't it amazing that as adults we too can learn a ton from homeschooling. I have had research answers to questions my children ask.

Thanks, I passed it on to some active homeschoolers (I’m an alum). Incidentally, I could only get this link to work: http://classroom.history.com/america-dvd/event/form.

Mystery of History! Great timeline pics that go with. Very easy curriculum for mom and my kids still ask for it! She has 3 of the books out now and is writing the 4th one.

We loved A Patriot’s History of the United States, too. We used the Sonlight curricula in addition to the REA CLEP US History books (I & II). Our daughter got great scores on the CLEP tests using that material. I cannot say enough good about the Patriot’s History.
