Skydiving is dangerous. Skydiving from a plane in outer space can kill you, with temperatures that can freeze a body and pressure that can boil blood. To survive his 23-mile plunge from the edge of space, Felix Baumgartner will depend on a truly unique new spacesuit.

After this is done I’m waiting for the next person to try an orbital re-entry from the space station or from an orbital spaceplane.

Joseph Kittinger is working as an advisor for the team. He’s a true hero.

"Only took fifty years to find another guy willing to risk it. And, like Yeager, Kittinger essentially took that risk for free."

And that's the way we were. We had "the right stuff." Gawd! I miss that America. We were really something back then. Young and broad shouldered. Space (the high ground) was ours for the taking. Clear steady eyes on the future. What happened to us?

His life insurance premiums murder = His life insurance premiums must be murder.

There seems to be some disagreement on where the “edge” of space is. I’ve heard 60 miles referred to as the edge at one point. My money is on where planes can no longer fly without oxygenated fuel.

That was Star Trek: Generations. In the original script, the movie starts with James Kirk doing a dangerous orbital skydiving thing, trying to recapture the thrill of his younger days.

There is a good space-jump sequence in the new Star Trek (2009) movie.

Several definitions have been used, the lowest of which is 50 miles (US Military and NASA astronaut badges). The others are the international standard 100 km (62.1 miles, The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Kármán line), NASA’s reentry altitude 76 miles, and around 100 miles, the lowest a satellite can remain in orbit for a period of time.

"What happened to us? "

I think the bad guys took over while the rest of us were in Vietnam.

But that's just my own, biased, egocentric, probably racist and clearly paranoid point of view.
