The crew in the rowboat muffled the oarlocks as they carefully rowed past the warship on the way to Charlestown.

And for the bonus round, how did the crew muffle those oars, according to David Hackett Fischer?

I thought that, too. Remember the description of the fight on the Battle Road on the way back to Boston? That was something.

Equally as entertaining and relevant as “The Crossing” novel with the original George W. If Washington didn’t cross the Delaware River just as Paul revere’s ride, we would be sipping tea right now.

I can’t find that book on Amazon. Are you thinking of “Washington’s Crossing”?

No, from Fischer's Paul Revere's Ride:
"A woman came to an upper window, and [Bentley and Richardson] whispered an urgent request. There was a quick rustle of petticoats in the darkness and a set of woolen undergarments came floating down to the street. The lady's undergarments, still warm from the body that had worn them, were wrapped snugly around the oars."
p. 104, the corresponding footnote identifying the lady as an ancestor of John R. Adan.

...how did the crew muffle those oars...

If my memory of Glenn Beck's recounting of the incident is accurate, with the bloomers of the girlfriend of a member of the crew.

I just received Hackett-Fischer’s “Liberty and Freedom” this week. He is one of my favorite authors. Looking forward to reading the new book.
