Firefox/Chrome Users: Get FR Tree View for Nested Threads on FR!
cynwoody ^

Posted on 04/09/2010 7:15:31 AM PDT by Dan Nunn

Some of you may know about this gem, but I want to make sure every Firefox and Chrome user knows about the beauty of FR Tree View.

I'm not taking credit for it, I don't know which FReeper wrote the software. But it's amazing! It makes following long, nested threads much easier. See a screen shot here:

list out the users in a format such that you could copy/paste them into a reply.

Not really quite so easy, but see my post 77 for step by step instructions on how to do this.

Well, here's what I put together. You're running Linux so you should be able to handle this :)

Do the "Search For," and after each one, add a newline, then the "After, Add This:".

Search For: var postCount = 0;
After, Add This: var posterNames = [];

Search For: s = poster.makeRow(s, ++n);
After, Add This: posterNames.push(poster.name);

Search For: s += '<br>Average poster seniority: ' + formatAge(averageAge()) + '.';
After, Add This: s += '<br>Reply to all: '+posterNames.join(";");
Now, when you click the Poster Report, a new section at the bottom will list all of the posters on the thread, separated by semicolons. Copy to your clipboard and paste it into a new message!

Yup. Saw that post. I may write a vi macro to automagically reformat the output as required if I can’t figure anything else out.

Thanks, but I am not running Linux. I have XP and FF 3.6.3.

You may do the same on XP & FF3.6.3 - I was referring to zeugma (who runs Linux) specifically.

I’m on Win7 and the same version of FF, and it works here.

Where do you do the script? In "about:config"?

Where do you do the script?

Open up this directory (the bold parts will change on your computer):

C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5cnv17re.default\gm_scripts\fr_tree_viewer

Application Data is a hidden folder so you may have to manually type it in the address bar to open it.

From there, you will see the fr_tree_viewer.user.js file. This is the file you can open up and edit.

Can you tell me what does the quote button do?

It doesn’t seem to do anything on Chrome. But on Firefox, it will “quote” (or display) the message that the comment was a reply to, without reloading the page. It’s kind of redundant on tree view, but if you prefer flat view, quote is handy.

Hi, Dan -
Thanks for posting a link to this script on the other thread.
I’m on here every day, and had no idea this existed!
I use Opera 11, and the Tree View/Poster View buttons seem just fine. Many times I’ve wanted this; both ways of viewing are good.
Many thanks!

I've been reading these black and white threads for over 10 years sunny and I don't need no fancy smancy color formatting. It's sacrilegious I tell you. Blasphemy!
