Come watch Milan... err... I mean BUTLER, beat the Evil Duke!!!
BTW, That’s Mark Few in the background.
This kid reminds me so much of Kiki Vandweigh (sp?)
Granted its a game and so in the grand scheme it doesn’t matter. But we conservatives like rules and following them. What a travesty then the non-calls against Duke. It is really comical. And what’s worse is Clark Kellog who must have been annointed the Duke cheerleader in Billy Packer’s absence. Have you ever seen an announcer agree with a ref’s non-call as much as Howard? I haven’t. And no less than two times does he then admit on the re-play that oh yeah that was a foul. And what the hell, is there a rule that Zubek is not allowed to foul out. He thrashes Howard to the ground and no-call. Same thing happened in the Baylor game. It’s really too bad, Butler should have made history, but that’s next to impossible when it is 5 vs. 8.
Kiki could stroke it, but he couldn’t guard a lamp post.
More like Mike Dunleavy.
One thing I’ve learned - - you cannot properly call fouls from the TV’s view. When you sit underneath the basket with a camera you see loads of stuff uncalled. It evens out.
NO REF wants to be seen as partisan. They work their butts off and try their best to be fair. It’s how they get graded, and it is how they get to the pros and its big money and treatment.
Being a ref is a tough, tough job. I know, I’ve been one myself and taken a LOT of abuse from parents. BUT, I also know that I’ve blown some calls and inadvertantly given one team the breaks on calls. I was often my toughest critic. But I still believe that although the officials TRIED to be fair in this game, at the end (when it matters most), things were not quite even. One side (Duke) played much more physical and the fouls were not called as I felt they should have.
I’ve worn the whistle myself.
What people fail to understand is that you’re not always looking at the action. You’re going to miss some things, and some of the things you see you can’t believe.
I still regret one call I made - - twenty years later. Athletes blow it and they’re human. If a ref blows it we have a different story.
They need to get rid of Kellogg. He couldn't hold Billy Packer's jockstrap.
Stevens makes just $92,000.
WOW... I had no idea. Thanks for that information.
Damn! Too bad I didn’t find this thread till the end of the game... some post game thoughts on what turned out to be a fantastic basketball game.
I like most others was most worried Duke would blow Butler right off the floor. I thought Butler would be worse off than WVU was in covering Duke’s outside threats. When I saw the spread at only 7, I started to wonder maybe this could be one of those games to remember, which it did turn out to be.
Even with Howard in all that foul trouble, their defensive philosophy never changed. 3’s were contested for the most part. When they wern’t, Butler didn’t give Duke 2nd and 3rd opportunities at the basket.
Brad Stevens was in Coach K’s book for sure. When Duke went on that 8-0 run to go up 26-20, he calls the TO, gets his team settled down when you’re thinking Duke might run away and hide and run off 7-0 to retake the lead 27-26. From that point, 5 was the largest lead the rest of the night.
I liked Butler’s poise in taking the ball to the basket in the 2nd half which got Zoubeck into foul trouble and sent them to the line 14 times(made 12).Again the young one had coach K’s number...
As far as the hard foul at about the 6 minute mark, after seeing it 5 different angles I don’t think a flagrant was warrented. It was close but I think the right call.
End of game, Zoubeck missed the 2nd FT on purpose no matter what he’ll say about it. If that shot goes in, it’s the storybook ending of all time. It didn’t and Butler had to walk off the floor as losers, even though it’s hard to call them that.
Coach K and Duke certainly earned it and are champions. Oh one last thought. going into this game all the “experts” said Butler has no chance holding Duke under the 60 point mark they’ve averaged giving up all season. Well 61 was just barely enough to get it done....
I figure Brad Stevens will make significantly more than $92,000 next year. And the fact his wife is from this area scores more points in my book.....
I don’t think many will diss the Horizon League anymore either. Now if only Cleveland State can have some of Butler’s magic wear off on them.....
You must consider the audience when judging announcers. Ever watch a Notre Game game? Why do you think that the announcers are pro-ND, even during a losing season?
As one movie put it: No Bucks, No Buck Rogers. They are playing to the greater audience....and that has NOTHING to do with the game, as the players can’t hear it.
Even though I was rooting for the underdog, you could not ask for a better finish. They damn near won at the buzzer.
You mean the pick just before the last shot? Just saw the play again on ESPN and the pick was as clean as a plate coming out of my dishwasher.....
I thought he was 31, but FReeper John W says 33. Either way, Stevens looks like he could be one of his players! ;-)
No, I'm talking about the defensive player stiff arming the player that was driving to the basket and no foul was called.
Coach K has been there for 30 years. Let’s see what Stevens is making in 27 years... (not a fair comment!)
I mean, look at this year's Duke and Butler teams and last year's North Carolina team--players that stayed with the team at minimum two years. As such, they play very good as a team and enjoyed enormous success during the NCAA tournament.
