Word For The Day, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - reprobate
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 03/31/2010

Posted on 03/31/2010 6:55:01 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

reprobate • \REP-ruh-bayt\ • noun

1. a person foreordained to damnation
2. a depraved person : scoundrel *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

"He was just an old reprobate who lived poor and died broke...." (Richard Peck, A Long Way from Chicago)

Did you know?
These days, calling someone a "reprobate" is hardly a condemnation to hellfire and brimstone, but the original reprobates of the 16th century were hardened sinners who had fallen from God's grace. By the 19th century, "reprobate" had acquired the milder, but still utterly condemnatory, sense of "a depraved person." Gradually, though, the criticism implied by "reprobate" became touched with tolerance and even a bit of humor. It is now most likely to be used as it was in this August 1995 New Yorker magazine article about the death of musician Jerry Garcia: "It was suddenly obvious that Garcia had become, against all odds, an American icon: by Thursday morning, the avuncular old reprobate had smuggled his way onto the front pages of newspapers around the world."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Sunny and warm today-

Since Obama tells such lies
And since he is a thief
Should we not be calling him
The reprobate in chief?

First he says no drilling
Then he hedges-maybe so
But before a rig goes up
He’ll again be saying “no”

His precious little “studies”
Will no doubt do no more
Than prove we’ll kill the climate
By drilling oil offshore

He’s acting like he has a shred of intelligence, but he’s just playing CYA for the envirowackos with studies-their “findings” will only prove out their agenda.

Nasty Pelosi always reminds me of someone who is schizophrenic and off their medication-something about that extreme smile and those glittering eyes...

Finally, spring is back. We had sleet and snow this week, now I am out and about without a jacket and the sun is back. This spring weather is crazy.

Now I am off to bake snickerdoodles for my homies at the station.

Is it just me or is the reprobate on the right reminiscent of the SNL ambiguously gay duo?

The Puppet prez is a sitting duck and he is making himself so. I do believe that the man, at the instigation of his wife, is setting himself up for assassination. To much is mimicking the Kennedy years and it seems to be done with deliberation, as if it were stage managed.

He deliberately puts himself and his family in situations where they can come to harm. Why would someone do something like this? Is he planning on tearing the country apart with this plan?

My female intuition says that one of the Black Caucus is planning with the Prez for him to become another Kennedy/King icon. What better way to bring this country down than that by starting a civil war?

The man’s doomsaying hasn’t worked so another way will be found.

Good Afternoon, and thank you for choosing a word where the emphasis is on the personal, rather than the political.

And however aptly the word reprobate may apply to me, I still prefer the term salacious instead. It's pretty much the same degree of rapskallion-ness, but it has a more charming appeal.
