Iceland's Laki volcano erupted in 1783, freeing gases that turned into smog. The smog floated across the Jet Stream, changing weather patterns. Many died from gas poisoning in the British Isles. Crop production fell in western Europe. Famine spread. Some even linked the eruption, which helped fuel famine, to the French Revolution. Painters in the 18th century illustrated fiery sunsets in their works.

The winter of 1784 was also one of the longest and coldest on record in North America. New England reported a record stretch of below-zero temperatures and New Jersey reported record snow accumulation. The Mississippi River also reportedly froze in New Orleans.

A search on “1784 eruption” gives many hits. A cursory look gives confirmation of the freeze.

It has to get pretty cold for moving water to freeze. The water itself needs to get pretty cold.

We should file an injunction in federal court. If need be maybe we can get a ruling from the UN security council banning Iceland from operating its volcanos without a permit. At the very least they should have to buy up some forest in equatorial guinea and place it into the land bank as an offset if they insist on destroying the planet.

Volcanic eruptions = cure for global warming.

No one ever talks about the pluses of global warming and the minuses of global cooling.

(channelling gore-bull warming ‘scientists’)

All lies, lies, lies!!!

Everyone knows that Gore-bull warming is happening, so there will never be a time where temperatures drop.

Anyone who says otherwise is a gore-bull warming denier and must be burned at the stake!

Nothing good comes from a flood basalt eruption. Seeing as how Iceland is over a hot spot and the mid-Atlantic ridge, a whole lot of magma is available for this event.

Somehow, this seems ironically fitting considering the demise if the American Republic (even if only temporary). Not that there is any connection, of course.

The only results I can find are from weather related sites which all state “The Mississippi River froze at New Orleans”.

I can accept that maybe some backwater areas may have iced over near shore, but for a river-wide freeze I’m highly skeptical.

“Nothing good comes from a flood basalt eruption.”

It’s one of the pictures next to the dictionary description of “having a bad day”.

Even here in southern Michigan its pretty rare to see a river freeze over solid in an average winter. Mostly they tend to freeze along the edges and around objects sticking up.

I know it can get mighty cold down that way but I suspect it takes some extended cold even to get a thin skim of ice in the backwaters. After all the water cools much slower than the air.
