REYKJAVIK, Iceland – A volcano in southern Iceland has erupted for the first time in almost 200 years, raising concerns that it could trigger a larger and potentially more dangerous eruption at a volatile volcano nearby.

I helped build a camp near the volcano that erupted earlier. A friend that lives there says they can see the eruption, and have some concerns. Not a lot of lives in danger, but there are some people living there. Please pray for safety, the Icelanders are great people I have several friends there.

I don't wish to distress our Icelandic friends but they're living on top of one of the world's most dangerous hot spots. For an idea of what's underneath their feet see this artist's conception: Icelandic Hot Spot

Hawaii and Yellowstone (and several other places on the planet) are also located above hot spots: weak places in the Earth's crust where huge volumes of magma are released periodically to the surface. Hawaii's current eruptions are quite slow and gentle as volcanic eruptions go. People usually have time to escape personal injury even though they may lose property. We hope the Icelandic eruptions follow a similar pattern.

Yellowstone, on the other hand, has a very explosive history, with incredibly violent eruptions about 600,000 years apart. While the time between eruptions is a very rough estimate, the last one was 640,000 years ago. A new supervolcanic eruption at Yellowstone would probably be the end of the U.S.A.

Yeah, maybe the fact that Iceland sits between two tectonic plates might be a factor in the amount of volcanoes there.

My father was stationed for a year in Iceland in the early 60’s. They were warned regularly not to try to cross the ancient lava beds as there were crevasses underneath & the surface could give way. While he was there, four guys took a jeep & decided it would be faster to cut across to their destination, rather than follow the road. They were never seen again.

In my collections of photos someplace, I have a photo of me standing with one foot on one plate, and the other foot on the other plate. My mother uses it when she teaches about tectonic plates.
