I thought I heard somewhere that, for whatever reason, military uniforms in movies or TV have to be wrong even if it’s some little detail.

I don’t remember why, and I could be completely wrong, but I heard that somewhere.

As far as I know that's incorrect. Even the "Stolen Valor Act" has an exemption for actors in movies or stage plays. I have a pretty critical eye for such things, and some movies have been better than others when it comes to uniforms, equipment, awards, etc. It also says a lot about the "technical advisors" the producers hire, and how competent they are.

I can not imagine why.

Besides I have seen some that were believable (that is I did not see any problems).

I just figured the person responsible was lazy. There is enough reference material out there (especially on the internet now) that it should not be an issue.

It is a minor pet peeve.

Many years ago, I worked in military uniform sales briefly. I was told about that, too. I think they don’t want people impersonating a member of the military, even if it’s for a show or other innocent reason.
