Anyone who has hunted extensively knows that you can shoot an animal right through the vitals (lungs, heart) and they may still run off.

Even if you shred an attacker’s heart with the first shot, they may be able to continue the attack for seconds afterwards, giving them time to kill you.

As many have posted, the rule is to keep moving, use cover where possible, and keep shooting until the threat is neutralized.

Exactly. Animals do walk away.

With the fragmenting rounds you’re essentially hitting them with a mini shotgun round.

Few people walk away from shotgun center mass hits, the same theory applies here in my opinion.

While I am not even going to read the essay, I know from personal experience that aiming for the largest visible mass is always appropriate. Anyone who thinks they can, under duress and a severe jolt of adrenaline/fear can precisely aim and fire shots, well, hasn’t been there and done that.

Yep.

Anyone who's been "trained" to shoot for the head in a gunfight needs to sue to get their money back, and name the charlatan so others can avoid him.

Well, tell that to the Police and Military Trainers once your done chastising everyone here...

The military is often way behind the curve when it comes to gunfighting tactics. thankfully, the focus on CQB and gunfighting in this most recent war has brought many changes including many of the things used by "gun gamers" to be successful in competition.

It was the miltary that gave us the M16A2, after all.

Rules for a Gunfight

Anonymous

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap - life is expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket."

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4".

25. You can't miss fast enough to win.

Just curious - have you ever had to put your theory to the test?

I’ve pulled a gun on folks one time, and didn’t shoot. There were 8 of them, and I had a .22 revolver. As they moved to surround me, I pulled the gun (which I had shot thousands of times and was very competent with) and aimed it at the head of the nearest guy.

They seemed to lose interest in me, and I moved around to the outside of them and got in my car using my left hand for keys and starting.

If they were homicidal maniacs, a 6-shot .22 wasn’t going to help much. If it had gone to a ‘firefight’, I’d have been killed (or forced to run like hell). But aiming for the head didn’t hurt me any...the one time I needed a gun.

“The only parts of a car that will stop a bullet is the engine block and trans.”

And as a kid, I shot thru both with a rifle. Maybe if the engine still had oil in it, but when a fairly anemic 7mm Mauser shot thru the engine block of an abandoned car, I realized that, among other things, sheet rock & doors & large shrubs didn’t qualify as cover...

Shooter 2.5:

"You were fine until the last comment and then you got carried away."

Carried away?

Shooter 2.5, I believe that the heavy hitters on your Profile Page, Applegate and Cooper, would be more inclined to agree with 1COUNTER-MORTER-68.

Kill the SOB once, and then kill him again, just to be certain.

As Col. Applegate so succinctly put it - "Kill or be Killed".

Every single instructor I ever had stated to shoot until the threat was over. Applegate and Jordan were not my instructors.

By the way, that’s a simple enough mistake about the title to Applegate’s book.

You're right. As many times as I've read the book you'd think I could at least get the title correct, LOL.
