Note that the photographs from the time depict far fewer trees than exist today at the same general locations. I first noticed this when I visited the Fredericksburg battle site. There are more trees today than in Civil War times-in general.

True. Lookout Mountain is another example.

The same is true here in Richmond. I have a huge book of Matthew Brady’s photos and most of the prospects look much more bare than today. I thought that many of the trees in the cities were probably used for fuel.

Well, you’re more than welcome to just bring your ass on down here and try it.

I wonder if they used coal for heating and cooking?

I’m sure most did use coal, but when it’s cold and money’s scarce the trees are coming down. Another thing is that I’m used to seeing Richmond a century and a half after the War and the older neighborhoods have had decades of tree growth. Also, the area around the state capitol building and St. John’s are so grown up that the older photos just seem so bare.

The Civil War in Pictures by Fletcher Pratt 1955 Garden City Books.

My parents bought that for me, too. Fascinating book.

“My parents bought that for me, too. Fascinating book.”

How wonderfully coincidental! My family was poor, but they made sure of one thing...a full subscription to the double day book club and understanding what a library was.

Books, and history in particular, were my window on the world and my time machine. I found then, and still find to this day, the stories of the real people and events so much more interesting than what we can make up.

“Books, and history in particular, were my window on the world and my time machine. I found then, and still find to this day, the stories of the real people and events so much more interesting than what we can make up.”

That’s exactly why I wrote my book. It was just too good of a true story to not all be down in writing in one place.
