In the USA, the disappearance of a nuclear scientist generates MUCH more news than this one did, it's quite shocking -- someone wrote a letter to the local paper, town of 4300 and one of the things mentioned is that plenty of the small town's residents have NO idea that anyone is missing.
SO peculiar.
For such a genius to disappear without a trace, and without an uproar from the public...... We truly have a breakdown of society in the West for something like this to transpire and so little publicity about it.
He has a huge website, and he was an active participant at online crystallography mailing lists, but that's all waaaaay over my head.
I'm confused that he had a POST-DOC position, but there's no mention of where he got a Ph.d, and I've never seen him used that abbreviation after his name in numerous articles he co-authored in scientific journals.

I haven't read it yet, but it occurred to me that in several different places and certainly on WS, someone mentioned that LC was proficient in nuclear WASTE, not in nuclear energy.
