“You can get a new Sigma series S & W for less than $300 but, I was told it is a throw-away weapon by a self-defense intructor/bailsman. They were originally designed to compete with Glock and Sig at a lowere price.”

What did he mean by throw-away? I bought a Sigma .40 last year. It seems decent enough, fits well in my hand and I can shoot it with either hand. I’ve only been able to take it to a range once but it was pretty accurate from 10 yards. The only drawback is that there’s no safety - it’s somehow built into the trigger which requires a little extra pull. I bought a bunch of snap caps so I can practice dry firing.

Like I said, it was designed to compete with and is nearly the same as a Glock. In his opinion, it wasn't worth the less money you'd pay for it when you could have the real thing.

Each to his own. My wife has a Glock 19 which I find cumbersome to fire/hold. (and I did like the way the Sigma felt)

IIRC, there were some specific issues with firing pins or something but, I moved on and probably looking at one of the Springfield XD models which is as much as a Glock. They have a safety built into the grip. if you're not gripping it, it won't fire.
