[Gordon] Lightfoot responds to death reports: 'I'm fine'
CBCNews.ca ^ | February 18, 2010 | staff reporter

Canadian icon Gordon Lightfoot said he was at the dentist when he heard on the radio that he was dead.

The folk legend, whose hits include If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, took the news lightheartedly and was soon on the phone with Toronto-based all-news station CP24.

"I'm fine, everything is good. I don't know where it comes from. It seems like a bit of a hoax or something," the 71-year-old singer said. "I was quite surprised to hear [it] myself.

"I haven't had so much airplay on my music now for weeks."

The initial reports of Lightfoot's death appeared on Canwest news sites on Thursday afternoon, spreading instantaneously across many blogs and Twitter posts.

The report was discovered to be untrue within minutes of the news being posted.

B.C. Fiedler Management, Lightfoot's concert tour promoters, put out a quick statement proclaiming Lightfoot "is alive and in good health" and that the report was "false and completely without merit."

"This is just an unfortunate prank," said promoter Bernie Fiedler.

Given the lifestyle he had in the 1970s and 1980s it’s amazing he’s still alive. He would lock himself in a cabin up north, binge on amphetamines and write a couple of hundred songs, then after he crashed he’d pick twelve of them to record.

His live concerts were terrific. When I was a kid I always had front row seats and his annual Massey Hall concerts;I got them free because my uncle was his manager at the time.

okay that will be enough of that. i had to endure an entire day (yesterday) of having the song “Back in the New York Groove” stuck in my head for no reason. if i wind up with The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in there tonight or tomorrow i will not be responsible for my actions.

That’s wild.

I’ll never forget one afternoon in Deep Ellum here in Dallas. We were out riding our bikes and we come around a corner and hear this song and this voice coming out of the bar Trees. It was him, Gordon f’ing Lightfoot, strumming and singing with hardly a soul in there listening to him.

It was him. He sounded pretty f’ing good. Good on ya bro.

"This is just an unfortunate prank," said promoter Bernie Fiedler.

I may or may not be responsible.

When I get something execrable like Beyonce stuck in my brain, I find that the linked song clears my brain completely.

Saw Gordon perform back in the early 90s. Love his music. Great songwriter. Love his phrasing. Very precise rhythm.

His song “Sundown” was about the woman/whore who gave John Belushi his death mix that fateful night.

I saw Gordon Lightfoot in concert here in Kansas City about 3 years ago, the voice is starting to go but for a cat who was in his late 60’s he was doing okay.

I think it was ‘67 , deer season , early November . I stopped at the LCBO on Lakeshore in North Bay . I stood behind him , with my cheap Five Star , as he checked out his order . I forget what brand but I remember thinking he’s buying the good stuff . Canadian Club , maybe Crown Royal.

It had to be said, LOL

Seems his daughter was very upset when she heard the news and quite relieved when he was able to speak to her personally.

We’ll keep all sharp objects and loaded weapons away from you then!

These are some of my fave lyrics from Gordie:

Rainy day people always seem to know
when it’s time to call
Rainy day people don’t talk, they just listen
till they’ve heard it all
Rainy day lovers don’t lie when they tell ‘ya
they’ve been down like you
Rainy day people don’t mind if you’re cryin’
a tear or two

If you get lonely, all you really need
is that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know there’s no sorrow
they can’t rise above
Rainy day lovers don’t love any others
that would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs
on a piece of mind

Rainy day lovers don’t lie when they tell you
they’ve been down there too
Rainy day people don’t mind if you’re cryin’
a tear or two.

Rainy day people always seem to know
when you’re feeling blue
High stepping strutters who land in the gutters sometimes need one too
Take it or leave it, or try to believe it
If you’ve been down too long

Rainy day lovers don’t hide love inside
they just pass it on
Rainy day lovers don’t hide love inside
they just pass it on

At the height of his career, no one could touch him.

It’s good to see he is making a come-back of sorts.
