Alright my fellow Freepers. Have been offered a 1943 Mosin Nagant as a gift. Will be used for target shooting and deer hunting. I know jack squat about this rifle.
Pluses, minuses, thoughts, advice...
Thanks!
Watch “Enemy At The Gates” if you want to know more about that rifle -
Great rifle, tough as nails, cheap ammo, fun to shoot.
Kicks like a mule-very reliable-short pull due to the thickness of the Russian military coats.
If you don’t hit the target with the bullet, you can still hit it with the barrel flame. Make sure you put a shoulder pad on it.
If it’s a gift, who cares :-)
M44?

7.62 x 54. Recoil is stiff. Ammo isn’t too bad. I have several and at the right price would buy another. I think it’s the best buy for the money.
I might have one of those, a 1945 model, I think, but I have never shot it. It is a manly gun, supposedly. I’m not positive what model it is.
parsy, who took it in trade
It shoots the 7.62X54R cartridge which is very close to the 30-06 in ballistics. Surplus ammo is still cheap for range shooting. The surplus ammo is probably corssive primer ammo so you would need to clean quickly after shooting with ammonia and water to remove corrosive residue followed by normal cleaning. I believe S&B makes soft point hunting ammo, check MidwayUSA.com for ammo. It should make a fine hunting gun.
my friend bought one some years back....ok shooter and accurate enough and more than powerful enough.
be careful with ammo though. lots of cheap russian ammo out there...some that use corrosive primers and if you dont clean the gun relatively soon after shooting the bore will rust up pretty bad.
That is a lot of rifle for deer hunting.
You can get hunting ammo for it.
It is accurate and can be scoped but not easily.
The bolt is sticky and sucks, but I would take one if I was given one.
Heck I bought a couple.
Lotsa fun. Google mosin vs ak vs m16

There you have it. In the end, it is clear to any open minded inquirer that the Mosin Nagant is the most superior weapon of all time, but the AR and the AK come out as a draw when compared side by side. |
We have several and we love them all. My wife loves shooting them as well. Pretty cheap fun. Of course we love our AK and other eastern block firearms as well. We have a bunch of Nagant Revolvers, but you have to reload if you want them to be economical.

heh. Just bought a 1937 Tula arsenal model 91/30 Mosin nagant today. That makes #4. The long rifle’s recoil is ok. The carbine version (M38 or M44) is pretty stout.
Check the Mosin area at http://www.surplusrifle.com for info and disasembly instructions. Lot’s of info there.
Mine looks like the Mosin in the picture, just not quite as long. Plus, mine has a bayonet.
