My father's grandparents came to the United States together from Germany and Sweden. They moved to Nebraska and farmed there, his dad farmed there, and he left the farm after high school to do other things.

One thing we always had growing up, on special occasions, were swedish "little thin" pancakes. They were great! We also occasionally made ebelskivers, but I think those are Danish. There was always a short jar of pickled herring in the refrigerator as long as I can remember. I ate some now and again, it wasn't too bad.

Are lingonberries swedish?

Depends on what you mean by winter. The seasons in Sweden are actually pretty varied and I personally like the way the length of the day varies during the year. During the summer the sun is up during most of the night. During winter the sun is really low which makes the landscape really beautiful during the short time of daylight.

Welcome to Free Republic! I have a question: “how do Swedes view SAAB now? Do they care about the company? Does Sweden have a lot of pride in regards to SAAB and Volvo? Thanks for the answer.

It’s called surströmming and is actually fermented. Personally I don’t eat surströmming because I can never get close enough. Apparently it tastes quite good if you manage to fight the stench and taste it.

You can always tell a Swede,
You can always tell the Dutch.
You can always tell a Norveigun,
But you sure can’t tell him much.

No idea. I guess we do live pretty close to each other, have similar cultures and our languages are pretty much the same. I guess they are closer to us than the Swiss which is the other nationality we frequently get confused with.

Here’s a question. Does the Norwegian language sound like Swede with a very thick accent or is it more foreign to your ears? Danish?

Depends on where in Sweden you are. There is a huge difference between the northern and southern parts when it comes to day temperature. Usually though the temperature will only go above 26C a few days each year so using your definition we don’t have summer.

Heating our homes is usually either electric heating (Hydro/Nuclear), Geothermal and District Heating. I hope that last one is correct.

Thanks for the welcome!
