My favorite mythical gun was Josh Randall’s “Mares leg” which appeared to be a model 92 Winchester shortened front and back.
Now the gun would have been a normal gun if it fired 44-40 ammo but this one somehow fired around a dozen 45-70 rounds which is what was on his gun belt. Of course that short underbarrel mag could not have held more than one of those if that.
Still it was a neat looking gun and different from all the other 1873 Colt Peacemakers everyone else used.
It's a cut-down version of the iconic Winchester Model 1892, chambered in .44-40 Winchester - a historic, but antiquated, round that's recently regained popularity with cowboy-action shooters. This configuration was made popular by an up-and-coming Steve McQueen, in 1958, when he played bounty hunter Josh Randall in the western adventure series Wanted: Dead or Alive. On screen, it was dubbed the Mare's Leg, and fans also often referred to it as the Winchester Randall, in honor of the Josh Randall character. Although Randall carrying an 1892 model in 1877 is an anachronism, and his belt had larger rifle rounds than the .44-40 it was chambered in, it was an undeniably neat piece that helped define the character. It also made appearances in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., The Magnificent Seven and even Firefly (it was the same prop from Brisco County Jr.)
It may have been "mythical" during the run of the series but you can buy them now.
