I read an article noting that Haiti’s GDP is primarily money from Haitians working in other countries and sending paychecks to families in Haiti.

That transfer of money would stop (has already stopped) and Haiti will never recover. Watch for some multi billionaire to buy up all the abandoned land and create a tourist mecca or a new Cuba.

I feel and pray for the Haitian population, but I've decided not to donate to the relief beyond that. Not this country and not this time. They've gotten too much over the years and they've squandered it all with absolutely no thanks or gratitude.

The only functioning roads and infrastructure in that country were ones we built for them back in the 20's and 30's. They let them all go to rot while dictator after dictator took everything we gave them and spent it on themselves. The people, unfortunately, bear part of the blame for that as well because they keep installing these scumbags. They finally got a shot at free elections when Baby Doc was overthrown in the late 80's...and then they go elect a marxist dipsh*t like Aristide. Or the current scumbag Rene "I lost my palace" Preval.

Tourism is something Haiti could actually do well in if they'd only get their heads on straight. Location, climate, and natural resources are all in their favor. They could be a new Jamaica or Bahamas. It works great for all their neighbors, including the other two thirds of their own island.

But nobody wants to go to a country that's a dysfunctional craphole where roving gangs of machete-wielding thugs are commonplace, the government gets tossed out in a revolution every couple years, and a large portion of the population regularly participates in bizarre animal sacrifice rituals as their primary religion.
