Paula was a great moderating factor for the Simon-Seacrest tension. I know. They could always deflect to Paula. She was reliable comic relief.
They hire a comedian to replace her and she just sits there quietly all night.

The key is...Ellen is a comedienne because she writes her own schtick OR she has great writers FOR her on her TV show...Now she has to ad lib, and quite frankly, she sucks at it!
