I doubt too that Khalid Sheik Mohammed is ever tried in New York; that partisan gambit will be quietly Guatanamoized.

Disagree with VDH here. This is a matter of principle with Obama, Holder and the Left. They will not be unhappy if KSM makes the proceeding into a circus and tries to put the Bush Administration and American foreign policy toward the Middle East on trial - Obama and Holder share the same view of Bush and American foreign policy.

Victor Davis Hanson: I don't think right now the question is over interrogation techniques, but rather not giving this foreign national would-be mass murderer full rights, as if he were a common criminal rather than a non-uniformed soldier at war... And in reaction to all this, Secretary Napolitano nonchalantly talks about the system working like "clockwork"? I think very soon we will hear of no more "overseas contingency operations" and "man-made disasters" -- and no more Janet Napolitano as head of our homeland security. And when the next official struts and says "Bush did it", the public will sigh "Thank God, he did", since in comparison with the seriousness with which the prior administration dealt with terrorism, the Obama team seems to consider radical Islam an interesting catalyst for a civil liberties debate. "Reset" button probably won't be used any more either -- the phrase is too ironic now, and would mean going back to our anti-terrorism policies from 2001-9, which are preferable to the present mess. In political terms, one cannot ask millions of Americans to take off their belts and shoes, and then not put someone like Mutallab on a no-fly list.

We are in a race between sober people around Obama trying to apprise him of the danger, and his natural Carter-like take on America’s partial culpability for world tensions. Let us hope that the serious people win.

There are no serious people around Obama. Everyone close to him thinks he's doing swell.

VDH seems to view Obama as some sort of naive ivory-tower academic type as to whom events are making face up to reality. I think that view is mistaken, and that Obama really is a hard-left guy. And Obama is simply not that sensitive to negative public opinion; if he were, he would have tamped down the drive toward government control of health care when such a large opposition to it arose over the summer, instead of saying that he would be willing to be a one-term president so long as he could get the health care takeover passed. I believe it is the same with the whole agenda - the hard Left will try to get all of it now, including amnesty and path-to-citizenship for illegals, and damn the consequences at the polls.

In my opinion, this guy should be treated exactly the same way the Bush/Cheney administration treated the so called shoe bomber, Richard Reid. The precedent has been set Mr. Obama, take off the kid gloves. Reid attempted a very similar crime. He was a foreign national who tried to explode a bomb on an American airliner and was stopped by the passengers. Why can’t the current administration handle Abdul Mutallab like the Bush administration handled Reid and work to keep America as safe from terrorism as Bush/Cheney did?

I think he believed all the crap that he was the Savior of the World and leader of mankind. All he would have to do to create eternal world peace would be to just sit down and talk with all the crazies uh er deprived unfortunates and they would come around. No terrorists here. Reality must be a cruel mistress for Obama.
