Osprey, Pandion haliaetus. This is a fairly young male. He’s turning out to be a good model, I just hope no one spooks him. I don’t know why anyone would want to but there are a lot of strange people around who hate hawks of any kind.

I coulda sworn the Osprey was warlinus Boeing; serious death from the sky, powered by Rolls Royce 6,150 shp turbines.

At any rate, that is a fine lookin’ bird. Cudos to the photographer. This back-wood boy is a fan of the redtail hawk.

A few months ago, I watched a bald eagle swoop down from about 150ft (he circled and zagged) and grab something from a little lake just North of Forresthill, Ca.

I tried to get a pic with my cell phone but he was too far away. I waited, but he never came back.

No offense, Swampy—I like hawks, but I love my chickens! I’d have to admit that I’d spook him if he got too close. Got a huge hawk keeping an eye on my chicks right now. So far, they’ve been smart enough to stay up under the thick woods where he can’t fly so easily.

He’s in good company—we’ve also got a bald eagle, tons of ospreys, the huge owls,(barn owls?) foxes, coyotes, bear, alligators...

Sucks to be a chicken around here!

Some years back we had an osprey that must have been passing through Kansas City. The osprey really enjoyed the koi and crass carp that we had in our cement pond, I mean fire protection resevoir, at work.

I saw it dive on the pond several time but it always broke off at the last minute, a couple of my co-workers saw it take off with a fish a couple of times though.
