It reminds me of the work of Richard P. Powell, who wrote "Pioneer, Go Home!" from which the movie "Follow That Dream" with Elvis Presley was made.
Powell also wrote "Don Quixote, USA", about a very improbable hero and the army he inherited. I really enjoyed that one.
