"Mine was a rather stupid one, kind of like having a really dumb dog. Had wings, but didn’t fly much because the rider/maintenance boy is afraid of heights. No magic, because the only person that had any magic was the evil king, and his was more voodoo than anything else. And I don’t think I had it breathing fire, but I may have just forgotten about that point. It was nacho-cheese orange, with black wings. And you had to feed it every four hours or so, else it would get hungry and start munching up the furniture and potted plants in the office."

I like your irreverent and whimsical story. It reminds me of the work of Richard P. Powell, who wrote "Pioneer, Go Home!" from which the movie "Follow That Dream" with Elvis Presley was made.

Powell also wrote "Don Quixote, USA", about a very improbable hero and the army he inherited. I really enjoyed that one.
