Woman killed in text messaging accident

Vinnie Sorce knew something was wrong when he saw a police officer pull into the driveway. He immediately sent his three children, two boys from a previous marriage and a little girl with his fiancee, to their rooms so he could talk to the officer outside.

"Time just froze," he said.

Sorce's fiancee, Stacey Stubbs, had headed to Phoenix for a doctor's appointment.

She never made it.

A Ford pickup truck hit Stubbs' rented PT Cruiser head-on on an isolated stretch of road near Lake Pleasant, killing her instantly. The other driver, Ashley Miller, 19, was thrown from the truck and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Sorce later went to the hospital to identify Stubbs' body.

"You could see her nose was broken, and her fingers were all crushed, like she had gripped the wheel," Sorce said.

A familiar pain flooded back. Sorce had lost his first wife, Lisa, to cancer eight years before.

"The hardest thing I thought I'd ever have to do was tell the boys their mom had died," he said. "All of a sudden I had to do it again."

A few days later he was enraged to hear that Miller had been text messaging on her cell phone. Based on a message Miller sent a minute before the 911 call reporting the accident, police surmised that she became distracted and crossed the center line.

Crashes blamed on cell phone use and text messaging as well as recent studies outlining the dangers of the practice have helped build interest around the country in restrictions.

As of late 2009, six states - California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Washington - and Washington, D.C., required drivers to use a hands-free device, and 19 states and Washington, D.C., prohibited text messaging behind the wheel.

How do you enforce this?

Driving on a state highway in Ohio last last week the car in front of me was almost hit head on by an oncoming car that was drifting into our lane ... I could see the driver as she passed me ... a young teenager on a cell phone.

You didn’t read the entire story, did you? The article mentioned that this man had lost his wife 8 years before to cancer and never thought he’d ever have to tell his children they lost another mother-figure in their life until that cop showed up at their house.

Here’s an irony. One day, while on the way to help a relative, my phone rang. It had fallen to the floor and in case it might be important, I pulled off the freeway, so I could find a parking lot to return the call. I waited for the oncoming traffic to go past, so I could get onto the service street. I had pulled forward a little and was about to pull all the way out into traffic when the car behind me rearended me because she had not been paying attention.

I’ve driven for 25 years now, in every imaginable environment from mountains to deserts to twisty windy jungle roads in hurricanes, ice storms, dust storms, and every other conceivable condition across 32 countries on 4 continents. I have never had an accident, and in my early years I even used to drive intoxicated from coast to coast. I have, however had a few close calls and each one of those had to do with texting. It is amazing how even looking away from the road in the amount of time to read 10 words on your phone is enough to cause catastrophe. I am addicted to phones, but now I grit my teeth when my phone beeps, and wait until I can stop to read the all important text.

Insane; the measures you’ve got to go to just to get around. I’m always conscious of motorcyclists given I’ve had three childhood friends lost on their bikes due to motorists being less than vigilant.

Being more vigilant does no good on a two lane road, oncoming traffic with a 130 mph closing speed and the other driver crosses center 100 feet in front of you. Mario Andretti could not even avoid it.

We have had three head ons during the last two weeks in this town/area resulting in 5 deaths. A town of only 100,000.

I have had three close calls in the last week from people talking on cell phones. Two rolling thru stop signs and one lane change that would have taken my right front fender off.

Being a “States Rights” kind of guy, I can’t agree with you on this one.

I feel the same way about Gay Marriage, the Death Penalty and adhering to anything The Democrats in D.C. pass into Law.

I wouldn’t give a Rats Ass if the entire Capitol Building burned to the ground as long as it was filled with every Democrat and RINO House Member and Senator.

Amusing, on a conservative/libertarian site, to see so many posts to the effect that there out to be a law. This tendency has resulted in municipal, state and federal code sections of libraries occupying whole walls of book shelves. It's getting to the point that you can't take a dump without consulting with an attorney.

Illustrating the dangers of this tendency, a post here a few weeks ago dealt with a California motorist who pulled into a parking space at a Starbucks to make a call. A police officer pulled in next to him and wrote out a ticket. In order to legally talk on a hand-held cell phone in a car in California, apparently, you not only have to be parked, but the car must not be running!

Yeah, but they gotta catch you first...
Burst mode activation will kick a phone off the network
but would be impossible to triangulate

It can't be morally worse than the carnage seen
from the incessant talkers and texters

I will not answer my home phone between the hours of 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. I feel that if is an important call they can leave a message or call back at a decent hour.

So the obvious two wrongs don’t make a right never entered into the picture.

IMO people with jammers should be hung.
