My wife and I, and our two teenagers are off on a well-earned vacation to Mittersfeld (Black Forest/Bavaria) and Salsberg on Christmas Day thru New Years. I'd appreciate any feedback from my second family as to what to see (or don't bother to see), as well as some out of the way places to visit.
You’re welcome Paul.
Not just a cape...

In Salzburg, they have tours of the “Sound of Music” sights from the movie; the Mirabell Gardens are in the “do-re-mi” song. The Cathedral, of course, is the one in the movie, too.
If that’s too touristy, then see the Mozart sights (it’s Mozart’s hometown).
Prague is beautiful, too. Old town, the Charles bridge, and St. Vitus cathedral are ‘must sees.’
Further north in Bavaria, check out the Roman wall at Regensburg (Castra Regina, dating from 179 AD) and the nearby Cathedral and Town Hall.
Continuing, see fine mixtures of old and new in Munich's Marienplatz and Nuremberg's Altstadt (another 14th Cent. walled city)-- if you have the time and inclination, go to Nuremberg's Zeppelinwiese, site of the massive Nazi rallies.
If you want more detail on any of it, holla back :)
When we were in Germany a couple of years ago, we visited Dachau. It will change you. It is THE most sobering place I’ve ever been. For me, besides that, the highlights were the Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberg) and the Mercedes Museum (Stuttgart). We only had about 3 days in Germany, so we didn’t get to see the Technology Museum in, I believe, Sinnsheim, but I’ve heard it’s well worth a visit.
Another highlight for me was driving over 100 MPH on the Autobahn. Of course, I couldn’t do that until my wife fell asleep in the passenger seat. :-)
I took a tour on a boat on the Mosel River and went wine tasting there. I had a great time.
Rothenburg is beautiful. I recommend it.
Rothenburg has a good Kris Krindlemart before Christmas. Not sure if it is still up after Christmas.
