What would two dozen servers from across the country tell you if they could get away with it? Well, for starters, when to go out, what not to order, what really happens behind the kitchen’s swinging doors, and what they think of you and your tips. Here, from a group that clears a median $8.01 an hour in wages and tips, a few revelations that aren’t on any menu.

I don’t see why non-family groups should be discriminated against. A policy should be a policy.
Incentive based compensation systems are often the most efficient, effective and most closely reflect capitalism.
The system works, which is why it is used virtually everywhere.
A wait staff person has an incentive to serve well in order to get paid a decent amount. Many professions (if not all) require pay based on performance and tipping is one method of recognizing performance. It is immediate and direct. The wait staff is getting immediate feedback on how they are doing there job. No need for performance reports, quarterly reviews, etc.
That's true. But she likes the tip.
If I am ever at a table where one of my dining partners is rude, I go out of my way to apologize to them or I at least discreetly let them know that the rest of the table does not approve of the behavior.

My mom worked as a waitress, so I tip above the average. Unless she/he is a total idiot, then I tip lower.
I always tip the bartender with each drink. Sometimes they will slip you a free drink.
And I never leave pennies.

They are sweet any way.
I go to one restaurant so often I do not even have to order. That’s good service and I pay for that.
An Esthetician:
-Facials
-Waxing
-Makeup
Anything to do with beautifying the face or body which includes, body wraps scrubs and so on. fun job.
My wife and girlfriends just dined at the Olive Garden in St. George, UT. During the chit-chat, the younf server mentioned that he gets $2.19 an hour as the company figures he’ll make out on tips.
I would have thought that was a ploy to generate a good tip but one of my daughters-in-law waitressed for a while and reported the same abysmal wages. On top of the $2.19, the guy said that the company held out $2.00 an hour for “withholding on tips”. If true, it’s a major screw job (waiting for the Free Enterprise crowd to appear).
I start the tip at 15%. The server gets extra if:
1) They ask if I’d like a slice of lemon with my water (yeah I heard about lemon-handling)
2) They refill my glass of water without asking.
3) They ask if I’d like my coffee with the meal or after (that’s a tip off that they’re a professional)
4) If it’s a female and they touch my shoulder (if it’s a male I yell MOMMEEE! :-) )
5) If they add a hand-written “Thank You” etc. to the back of the bill.
There’s probably more, but these come to mind now.
If they do any of the above, I tell the manager they have a good one and because of that, I’ll be back. I have done that even at all-you-can-eat buffets where the interaction is minimal.
If I’m a first-timer and plan to be back, I’ll tip the gold-colored presidential dollars instead of paper on small tips. You tend to be remembered. (Works like a champ with the casino cocktail waitresses).
AS others have posted, if I have a coupon, I tip on the original price. I’ve had acquaintances who did not and I made a point to unobtrusively go back to the table and sweeten the tip.
I’m not that well off but if I am eating out, that means I have a few bucks to spare and I will pass some of it around if the server is even halfway decent as I figure they’re getting a crap wage - especially if they’re older (you know they’re stuck in that job).
The wife NOW tells me the guy said the company withheld $2.00 A DAY, not per hour.

One of my favorite restaurants in town has a great policy. No kids, no substitutions and one credit card per table. The food is fantastic (Okinawan, Korean and Japanese fusion) and reasonably priced. If your are brave when it comes to food you can tell your server what you want to spend per person and the Chef will send you plate after plate of wonderful dishes. Last time we went we got local fresh sea urchin, yellowtail, grilled duck hearts, a Korean meatball dish and braised shortribs to die for among other things a 20 bucks per person.
I was a cook at some better upscale casual restaurants for a while and a lot of thought goes into some dishes to create a sense of balance with the textures and flavors. Substitutions can mess up the flow and routine of the kitchen. If a dish has something that I don’t care for I will order something else.

It's a job I couldn't do. There ware way to many prima donna, the world owes me everything people, who go out to eat.

You can ask them what they think of Sarah Palin, and watch their eyes. If their pupils constrict, go eat somewhere else.
Oh, I bet the waitstaff have often made small changes to your special orders- they just don’t tell you about them.
