VIRUS SISZYD32.EXE KILLED MY FR COMPUTER
ME | 12-14-09 | Self

Posted on 12/14/2009 12:05:45 PM PST by Lady Jag

SISZYD32.exe has possibly killed my FR computer.

Yesterday it hit suddenly despite the anti-virus and other utilities I run to protect against such stuff.

The victim computer is one I only use for FR and the sites it cites. That is the only clue I have to offer as to where it came from. I run several computers off a network and my FR computer is the only victim.

This is the worst I have ever encountered and a search for it shows that it is very dangerous and it showed up only about a week ago (AFAICT).

From years of experience I knew what to do yet the virus blocked every action, not even allowing startup in safe mode.

MalwarBytes, Spyware Doctor, SpyHunter and another one or two I tried to run were able to find it yet were blocked and defeated by siszyd32.exe.

This is day 2 and the computer boots with a black screen.

WARNING! Update all your protection software including registry cleaner, et al.

HELP! Can anybody help me get my FR black screen computer back?

Might want to look at Linux Mint

Interesting. Not up her alley, though.

It's too bad more people don't realize how easy it would be to ditch MS Windows.

I have Win 7 on a new desktop and it seems pretty stable. I went from XP so I only have other's comments as to how it compares with Vista. But it is very snappy, at least with the hardware I have.

Remove the disk drive put it in a USB enclosure and mount it on a Linux or Unix© machine to recover the data.

Whoa, hold the screwdriver! You don't need to do all that. Download, burn and boot from a Ubuntu Linux LiveCD and boom, you're on a Linux machine. No cracking the case open or purchase of a usb case enclosure required.

Choose the first option to run Ubuntu without installing (or some wording  like that...) Once the shell comes up you can access the hard drive through the Places menu, plug in your usb key and copy over your important files.  When you're done, right click the usb drive icon on your desktop and choose Unmount, Eject or Safely Remove (doesn't matter which) before you remove the usb key to make sure its done copying files.

Hardest part of the whole operation is figuring out how to burn an iso CD image if you're running Windows XP.

Now can’t get to the bios.

Interesting. If you're getting nothing but black, no error messages, no access to setup, nothing - then it does sound like an issue with either the firmware (BIOS) or hardware. Another possibility is the computer is hung in a suspended state.

Some PCs have a provision to reflash a tatered bios using a key sequence or by booting from a specially prepared USB drive (usually a thumb drive). You might look for info on your PC maker's support site, or you might have to search some user forums for the info.

But first you should try this if you haven't yet - Start the computer, make sure it is running (indicator light, fan, etc. are on), then push the power button and hold it in, probably at least ten seconds, until you hear the whole system click off. Then turn it on again and see if you get a more normal looking startup sequence.

No need to burn a CD. Just download a utility called "unetbootin" (google it). Download your ISO image then run unetbootin and have it place the image on a $5 flash drive. You could do this with any of the regular linux live CD images or the linuxrescuecd. Works like a champ.

She has an rather old puter,...9 years I think...so may have no USB port....

But it does seem that the first thing to do is see if the old box can still get things going prior to kicking the operating system into gear....

Okay. And it would have to be an ATX or newer system for the power button trick to work too. But I have seen a lot of FTBs on Win2K and WinXP that were actually failure to shut down - so the comp. would just hang in a sort of suspended state with just a black screen no matter how many times it was turned off and on, because the normal power button cycle doesn’t really shut off the computer, Windows does. A long hold on the power button would bypass the Windows shutdown and force a cold boot. An older AT wouldn’t be subject to that problem since it doesn’t have the PM support, and a normal power button cycle always forces a cold boot.

Ok, I'm going to nitpick and go on record as saying that burning an iso to a .35 cd-r to boot from is easier and therefore preferable to making a bootable usb from even a $5.00 flash drive.

The only 2 things that have come on from a cold boot are the power lights on the tower case and the monitor.

It’s an old system. It must have heard me planning on replacing it early next year after harvesting files.

It actually has 2 USB ports in the back. Have to run the mouse off one.

The learning curve on this thread has tuckered me out more than the stress of wrastling the computer. All the impressive replies spin the head of an ordinary surfer, still haven’t finished reading it and probably won’t till tomorrow when I tackle the box again with everyone’s suggestions.

Could be just it's time to go. 9-10 years is a long time for a PC, and other than to recover data, not worth a whole lot of effort to fix.

But I'm not convinced the virus is the cause of your FTB. A virus can't very well do it's work on a computer that won't run.

In 84/85 I started with the Commodore 64 (on Q-Link, 300 baud) and briefly went to a primitive IBM, simple name I should remember.

Had Windows since it came out and never had much trouble. The only Windows OS’s I haven't had are 2000, vista & 7. Never had trouble with ME or 3.1 and loved 95.

A friend has Linux on one of several machines, has tried several Linux versions, and doesn't care for it. Seems it takes a certain type.

Tomorrow I would suggest you first focus on whether or not you have a hardware problem...

Not sure what to tell you to look for if you can't get the BIOS screen up...guess see if the fan on the heatsink is turning,..

After I’d picked it clean the old gal was to be retired in a month or two. It has utilities on it that won’t run anywhere else and it’s so customized it’ll be a huge pain in the ass and complement the headache.

The old computer has been a rock; it’s had 4 Windows OS’s in it. Tried to duplicate it twice and haven’t been able to do it. I may have to have a memorial for it.

There’s still stuff I’d like to get off of it.

You got that spot on. After having put it on a bench I can assure you there is a bunch of cat hair in there. The fan’s been running all along. Had one freeze up on me once and never again.
