The photo, dubbed 'Partners' was taken by photographer Bragi J. Ingibergsson on a Canon EOS 5D camera in Hafnarfjördur in Iceland. Judges praised Mr Ingibergsson's "vision and perseverance to give an ordinary scene significance and a sense of wildness". As well as winning the Planet Earth category, he also walked away with the overall prize as the judges commended the shot's "simple and quiet nature".

I saw that on the UK Telegraph. What beautiful horses. Your copy here is a little dark. The picture on the UK Telegraph was a little lighter with a light blue sky. I assume these horses are wild.

Simple and quiet is one thing, but this one jumped the hurdle into boredom. Yes, I clicked the link.

I don’t think there are such things as “wild” horses in Iceland. (I’ve never heard of Icelanders hunting horses for meat).

Joe - you are right. I saw it the other night and it looked lighter. Beautiful horses.

Winners, in Motion Cat

Winner
The Pacu Jawi (cow's race) - Muhammad Fadli, Indonesia

"I took this photo at a traditional event in West Sumatra, Indonesia, called Pacu Jawi, which means cow's race or bull race. Held just after the harvesting season, this race has been a prestigious event for the farmers for hundreds of years. However, this is not a race in the traditional sense, it just finds the best cow of all. After the race, the good cow can be valued up to 60 million Indonesia Rupiah (about $6,000)."

Canon EOS 350D with Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 lens at 87mm; ISO 100; 1/400 sec at f/11

2nd Place
Goal - Janet Shui Kee Yim, Hong Kong

"This shot was taken in Myanmar. The little Buddhist monks had completed a whole day of learning and working, so played football together, treasuring the moment of fun and joy. Two years later they will be sent to different temples according to their academic performance for further study and careers."

Canon EOS 1D Mark III with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens at 82mm; ISO 200; 1/400 sec at f/5.6

3rd Place
The Jump - Nicola Bombassei, Italy

"This photo was taken along the 'The Normal Way' to the south west of the three peaks of Lavaredo (the Dolomites, Italy). When my friend proposed that we jump, I was worried. I replied 'You go first'."

Lots of good photos.

Looked around for a different copy. I didn't see the quailty needed for a photo award in that copy. The newspaper really droppped the quailty of the shot.

When I first saw the picture I was shocked. It didn’t seem to warrant it. Then I looked more closely. The picture really grows on you. It also has some great technical qualities. The almost monochromatic steel blue with the subtle brown in the rocks and horses hair. The framing of the horse in the background and it’s posture compared to the one in the foreground. The pattern of the clouds as a backdrop. It is an amazing shot.

There's a reason why the image is sized for the web.

It is kind of a nice shot, but I have the strange feeling I’ll be seeing it on black velvet soon.

Its a pretty common problem with photos on the web. Online newspapapers seldom take the time to properly compress their images before publishing them.

This one was 3888 pixels by 2592 pixels before I cropped it then compressed it. I still think it loses something going through imageshack. (I added a black and white layer blended in color mode to mute the color some)

My highschool son made a jump like that at something called The Gunks on a class trip.

I still have nightmares about the thought from over twenty years ago. The thought still stops my heart.
