Good post, and I agree. When I said similar things myself not too long ago, I never imagined the uproar I had created. If this thread catches fire, I hope you brought your flame suit, soldier.

Politics makes for strange bedfellows, but since the start of the "Town Hall" protests (several of which I attended to make Snarlin' Arlen Specter uncomfortable, by the way) I've been extremely uncomfortable with conservatives pointing out how Socialized Medicine is going to deprive seniors of their precious Medicare. That is going to happen regardless of the outcome of this debate, and conservatives must not be dishonest about that.

My Dad, age 85, has pointed this out to the very great annoyance of his friends: owing to when Medicare payments began, he and his peers actually paid little, if anything into this system before they retired. Yet many of them believe that they've actually made contributions to Medicare. When he tells them they never did, they don't believe him.

Social Security is almost as bad. It is true that had they any alternative to "donating" 12% of their income to a private fund they would have made out much better. But all of us are in that boat, and, as bad as the "investment" was, I am not responsible for the bad investment choices forced on me, or my father's generation by Democrat voters. People refuse to accept that the mathematics of this is merciless: the day is coming when not only are there going to be no COLA's for SS and Medicare, there aint going to be any money at all. When that happens, all of us will pay, because there is no way any politician will ever renege on the "promise" of Social Security. They'll simply print the money to cover it, and make everyone's money worthless in the process. Seniors will be placated, and my kids' and (future) grandkids' lives will be ruined.

One of my Dad's friends from the Army reminded him that they "saved America" (both are Third ID ground-pounders from WWII) sixty-five years ago. "Does that entitle us to destroy it now?" He asked him.

Apparently so.
