The term “Native American” was coined by the Dept. of Interior in the 1970s I believe.

The native Americans were here before Columbus, so someone had to find it first. I was gonna post the same thing. Obviously native Americans, or American "Indians" if you prefer, discovered it first since they were already here.

So, for historical purposes one can argue Columbus may not have been the first to discover the continents, but hes the one that matters long term.Maybe because his sailors brought gonnorhea and the Plague his visits had the most impact. It made the real estate preety cheap for subsequent visitors who wanted to stay.

It is hard to deny the incredible feat of sailing that Columbus achieved. It was it's true, his voyage that changed the world forever. I do like the emerging picture of people stumbling onto the new World for quite some time. There are tribes in South America who show negroid features and there were tribes like the Mandans who were said to be very European in appearance in North America. I guess that there was some contribution even if it was insignificant compared to Columbus. Most sadly the people of the New World had to wait until after Columbus to start enjoying chicken dinners again.

I prefer to call them First Americans, they are no more “native” than I am.

Wasn’t that Les Nessman, apologizing about throwing Thanksgiving turkeys from the WKRP newscopter to a crowd? LOL... great show :)

Chickens could not have gotten to South America on their ownthey had to be taken by humans,
Soft tyranny of low expectations.

Clearly an early affirmative action program. Chicken’s can’t “make it” without the Man.

The native Americans...
^^
I consider myself Native American because I was born here.

You are so right. Regardless of who came here before him, Columbus changed history and changed the world; the others didn’t. They left no mark on history, even if they left chicken bones.
