HE controversy over gender row champion runner Caster Semenya deepened today after reports claimed sex swap tests have shown she is a HERMAPHRODITE.
South African gold-medallist Semenya, 18, has both male and female organs, it was claimed.
And sources close to the International Association of Athletics Federations who ordered extensive tests on the teen after her amazing 800m win at the World Athletics Championships last month say the results mean she could still be stripped of her medal.

The controversy is she has elevated testosterone and many of the physical characteristics of a man and she is competing in a class exclusively set aside for girls. The whole reason we have female classes and male classes is that the top girls don’t run as fast as the top boys - the top girls don’t jump as far as the top boys - the top girls don’t throw as far or as hard .. etc etc etc

Very sad. It’s a difficult situation for someone who surely just wants to enjoy a normal life like the rest of us.

They should let HER keep HER stuff, disqualify her from future events, make a new regulation that pre-testing is mandatory, and set a testing standard that must be complied with so that this doesn't happen again. Kind of like we are doing with eligibility requirements for the White House.

I'd think he was somewhere in "Other" but then again I haven't checked. The net only says he was missing legs.
Did you see the notes about his brother being with him all his life ~ what a good brother.

I would say she shouldn't lose the medal as long as she's XX and not taking funny drugs or hormones. Special advantages caused by a natural medical condition should just be how the cookie crumbles for her competitors. How about competing in the Special Olympics since this is a birth defect?

Johnny lived into the 1990s if I recall but he got violently attacked at home by an intruder in the late 1980s (if I recall). He was born without legs but walked on his hands.

curtis is not a herm like this.
curtis is genetically a male (XY chromosomes), but she is physically all female.
when we are conceived, we are all female. at a certain point in the womb, a protein is released that makes males male. if the protein is absent, we stay female (obviously, the sperm carries the Y chromosome).
that is why curtis cannot have kids.

so what I’m now wondering is....you can either have XX or XY right?
So - as far as x’s and y’s go, can it be more “x’ish” or “y’ish” ??
Does it mean genetically your chromosomes say one thing - but something went haywire during actual development?
I feel bad for this person who has been fed to the wolves.

oh, jeez, i thought it was pretty much common knowledge. even though she has never publicly admitted this condition, it is a rampant 'rumor' i guess and she has never refuted it.
i did find this quote: "The only document that has ever been offered as "proof" was a 1996 op-ed piece in the Baltimore Sun written by William O. Beeman, associate professor of anthropology at Brown University, entitled "What Are You: Male, Merm, Herm, Ferm or Female?" The relevant passage reads as follows:
As a result, there are perhaps millions of XX males and XY females living in the United States today. These are cultural males with male genitalia who are genetically female, and cultural females with female genitalia who are genetically male. The film star Jamie Lee Curtis is one well-known individual who is genetically male, but phenotypically female."
evidently this was deleted from the actual article because the original doctor could not be found. regardless, it would violate doctor/patient privilege.

"It may boil down to chromosomes...is he/shes an XY, genetic male with femaleish parts...or is she an XX, genetic female with some maleish parts?" That's certainly the way I see it too, although I'm in no way a scientist, in any way. Irrespective of some anatomical anamoly or chemical/hormonal imbalance, I would think the XX/XY test would be the controlling "test". Bits & Pieces don't matter nearly as much as the genetic make-up, IMHO.

"FWIW I believe hormonally she qualifies as female." Hormonally or chromosomally? I would think that the latter would be a much more accurate test than the former.
