The pedestal where the serpent column used to be is still to be seen at Delphi. I've read that the heads of the serpents fell off in 1700 from "metal fatigue."

There was an ancient witticism (I forget who said it) that the people who colonized Chalcedon were blind--they failed to notice that there was a much better site right across from them on the European side.
