There's been a big fuss this week because Michelle Obama wore shorts. She's worn shorts before to walk the dog, do stuff around the White House. But the photos of her wearing them in that iconic descending-from-Air-Force-One-onto-the-tarmac setting proved too much for the media. Obamas? Check. Summer news doldrums? Check. Controversy? Close enough. It was a story.
* * *
But the truth is there was a conflict. It is within each of us. While nobody would make Mrs. O wear couture in Arizona in August, the truth is, she just didn't look particularly good in shorts. Her arms are much admired. Her legs are just, you know, legs. Nobody immediately stepped forward, as J. Crew did with her cardigans, to announce "Hey, we made those! You can buy them too at unflatteringshorts.com."

I AM DISGUSTED. I just cant imagine any past First Lady emerging from Air Force One dressed like this. These people have absolutely no respect for their position, nor do they have any respect for the US and all it stands for. Our stock, as a country, drops even lower in the eyes of the world because of stunts like this.
Jimmy Soul sang it best...’If you want to be happy for the rest or your life, never make a pretty woman.............’
The Macy’s catalogue has these Ralph Lauren bermudas on sale, Michelle!

I hear Zero is going to appoint a wardrobe czar.
“But from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you!”
I think that the low profile for the First Lady has softened much of the criticism of her here. Obviously something has happened re the press in my opinion. They made themselves look rather ridiculous in their first almost worship of her.
Though scared of her idealogy and previous statements, I feel she is doing well by being herself. Her entourage does disturb though and it's expenditure. Still, she has a right to enjoy her wonderful country- like anyone else. Hope she appreciates it.
*Just Michelle. Of course we would never criticize our beloved Barack. Never never never. Besides, he looks DREAMY in shorts!
I'm tired of people turning over every rock trying to impune the family members when Barack Obama and his policies are the issue.
Is she built like a linebacker? Yes. Big deal. She's travelling during the summer in Arizona. I'd wear shorts too.
I don't care what she wears. I don't care that she has a few more staffers than Laura Bush did. I don't care if she plants a garden at the White House or has a swingset built for her kids. She's a side show. A distraction. She's also NOT the issue.
Exactly.
She looks very rumpled (no pun intended). She looks like I do when I travel. Well, actually that isn’t true. I look a little better put together.
So why the heck couldn’t she have changed out of the “hey I’m just one of you ordinary people” clothes on Air Force 1 into some “hey, I’m the First Lady of the US clothes?” She could have still looked classy in casual.
The whole hoopla about what a fashion statement she is escapes me any way.
and still some on our side (or some that might SAY they are on our side) think that her appearance here is okay and can’t see the problem, good God.....
Either we are seeing a paradigm shift in how America is presented to the world or we are seeing the last Black president for many, many generations.
I completely agree.
I have dressed more nicely for days in the backcountry, and emerged not looking as bad as she did, after being waited on in her airplane. Most tourists dress pretty nicely/conservatively in the parks (I worked in them), nothing so trashy. And of course, none of them is the “first lady.”
I’m ashamed for our country whenever she emerges. Where is the respect for the office. Clothes and decorum do matter.
Who cares...it’s just a pic of Chewbacca walking off the Millennium Falcon in shorts.
what I remember NO. and HELL no. they were business attire.,
She has packed on the pounds....all that food and booze...
