I feel a bit differently about this affair. IMHO the compassion shown to a remorseless enemy who has long passed the point of being a threat, who has spent almost the entirety of his life in prison, and who is now mortally sick is something that separates us from them. Allowing him to return home to die is an honorable act shown to a dishonorable foe, which is something to be proud of. In the old days, enemies would have shown this kind of compassion to their prisoners. I think it was a courageous act that puts true Western values on display.
