Bolt is amazing, by far the greatest athlete at the 2008 Summer Olympics and continues his greatness.

Typo correction: 9.58 seconds. Hey, I sat on this for 10 minutes and no one picked it up. I rarely post.

Bolt is great. But I predict that if he ever begins to reflect, he’s done.

Greatest athlete of the 2008 Olympics was Michael Phelps. He won 8 golds, broke 7 world records, not to mention he did far more heats than anyone else, and did it all in just 7 days, and he was far more versatile, winning the 200/400 IM’s which require every single swimming stroke, plus his events ranged from the sprints(100 m fly) to the medium distance(400 IM).
Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever. Period.
Bolt is certainly the fastest sprinter ever by far, but is he even the greatest sprinter ever? History will tell, but right now, I'd give that particular honor to the great Micheal Johnson.
But yeah, this was a stunning race. 9.58 is just incredible. Bolt is close to being super human right now. Tyson Gay run an excellent race, taking apart the US 100 meters record, but he is just gonna have to go back t the drawing board again, if he wants to stand any chance of beating bolt at the 2012 London Olympics.

No doubt that Bolt is freak and is good, but I’m very suspicious of him and mnay of the current Jamaican crew. Unfortunately I’m sceptical of a number of track records. On the men’s side (not counting the hurdles) I think I have to go to the 800m and 5k before I’m relatively confident the guys were clean (and yes I am leaving out the mile/1500 and 3k).
On the plus side, at least track is now making an attempt to have a serious testing program, which is more than I can say for most pro sports.

Without question Phelps is great, but as a swimmer he has the advantage of improved technology with the high tech fast swim suits and the Beijing Olympics Water Cube that used improved design to make it the fastest pool in the world.
Bolt uses no better technology than all others that have preceded him in the 100M and shatters records that some thought never would fall.

Now that Bolt has brought the WR of the 100m down to 9.57 what to you think the best time will ever be in that race?
There are only so many fractions of a second that can be taken off of 9.57 and then there will be a WR that could never be broken.

Tyson Gay commented that Bolt “is phenomenal”. To me that means Bolt’s speed defies analysis. He seems to sail.

Ahhh.. but that is where you are wrong my friend. Current training methods for the sprinters are far more advanced than they were say in the times of Jesse Owens, the diet is better, the sprinters are stronger and better developed etc etc.
And don't think that we don't have “fast” sprinter tracks either, because we do. Some tracks are much faster than others, depending on what technology they used to lay the turf, that's why you often here them refer to “fast” tracks. Essentially, both sprinting and swimming have benefited from much improved technologies.
Like I said , I still think Micheal Jonson is the greatest sprinter ever, because he dominated for so long(nearly 10 years), and for the stunning times he did in both the 200 and 400 meters. I wanna see how long Bolt stays at the top for. Just 2 years ago, in Tokyo, Tyson Gay was unbeatable. Today, he's faster than ever, yet gets left in the dust by the human freak Usain Bolt. Sprinting always been like that. New, much faster sprinters just keep popping out of the woodwork every couple of years or so.

I like Havisham's post...
Bolt is great. But I predict that if he ever begins to reflect, hes done.
In sports, only Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak comes to mind as a comparison...but that IS NOT EVEN CLOSE...as runners have been roaming planet earth for much longer.

but Im very suspicious of him and mnay of the current Jamaican crew& Yup.
Only last month, 5 Jamaican track and field athletes tested positive for doping. And lets not forget another Jamaican athlete, Ben Johnson (albeit he was running for Canada at the time), who putting in equally stunning 100 meters times at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and even before that, only for it to turn out later he'd been doping all along.
Time will tell I guess.

Well, I adhere to innocent until proven guilty.
Bolt didn’t just beat the world record, he shattered it...that said, I don’t think that means he’s the best ever. If he keeps this up for the world championships and for 2012 then we can talk.
