Your Favorite or Recommended iPhone Applications (Vanity)
Vanity | August 13, 2009 | Scoutmaster

Posted on 08/13/2009 7:26:30 AM PDT by Scoutmaster

As the new owner of an iPhone, I'm overwhelmed by the number of applications available for it.

I'm certain many of you must have discovered some gems. What do you consider your top five useful applications? Your top two or three "just plain fun" applications? Your "you gotta see this to believe it" application?

I love the phone except the battery life is outrageously short and it required switching to AT&T from Verizon. I live in Atlanta and am stunned and how many dead zones and dropped calls I suffer here with AT&T. Verizon was like a tightly woven blanket.

My favorite paid apps are Trivial Pursuit, IBird but get the big one the backyard one isn’t worth the money and this app does use up the battery, and my granddaughter and I love Are you Smarter than a 5th grader (she is, I’m not). She also loves Eat Bunny Eat. Freebies include iFart (no wait, I actually spent money on that), Paper Toss, Yelp, and the Weather Channel. I’m probably the only person in the world who has several bible apps, two versions of the rosary and ifart on my phone. I have a very complex brain.

My favorite apps are: WeatherBug Elite, Amazon Kindle (for Bible reading), Byline (RSS reader), What’s On (TV schedule)and WhiteNoise (let’s me listen to crickets chirping as I fall asleep). For games, I really like Stone Loops of Jurassica.

Congrats on your Iphone. It never leaves my side: Top five apps that I paid for: Alarm Clock: Use it all the time when travelling
Flickster: Movie info, trailers, local theater information
Newsstand and Newsaddict - obvious
Photogene - It's like photoshop for your Iphone...It's fantastic!
Constitution: Yes, the US Constitution at your fingertips
US History: EVERY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT such as The Magna Carta, the Federalist Papers, Gettysburg Address, Important Inaugural addresses, State of the Union Speeches, Songs, And Important Supreme Court opinions. It's an incredible application that you can actually search for what you want.

For fun:
SCRABBLE: I play with my friends via FACEBOOK and also it is great while I'm waiting around as you can play against the computer.
It's Trivia - Ben Stein trivia game. There's so much more...have fun finding out!

Most of my favorite apps are free or low cost.

Whitenoise-lots of sounds. good to fall asleep to block out noise and grandkids like it.

Google and Google Earth-you probably know what these will do.

GPS Lite-fun program to use when hiking, etc.

Yellow pages/white pages-great for finding business or people

Emergency Radio-Listen to police/fire calls all of the country. Also includes Nasa-cool during launches and landings

Offender Locator-I have light version. Shows 10 closest sex offenders in your area. You might be surprised who your neighbor is.

I like apps that sync to the web or with a desktop client so I don’t have to use the small keyboard to enter all data.

NoteSpark is an app for notes that syncs with a web portal, so you can login and have your phone notes on any computer.

Grocery Gadget is a great app that manages shopping lists, both on the phone or on any computer with a browser.

Remember The Milk has an app that syncs with their web portal, which is fantastic for todo lists.

Evernote has an app that allows you full access to your Evernote account, so you can keep track of anything you want. IMHO, Evernote is indispensable.

Other apps:

AroundMe is a great free app where you can search for things that are around you (restaurants, the nearest Wal-Mart, etc) based on GPS coordinates.

UrbanSpoon is good (and free) for finding restaurants and has reviews along with the ability to search restaurants by their proximity to you.

VisibleVote is good...gives you the option to vote on any legislation that your representatives are voting on and sends them an email telling them your opinion automatically. (I think it’s really funny that Obama’s approval rating has been ~30% on this app, which is amazing considering that iPhone users are considered liberal leaning.) — also free

Take Me To My Car is great...you tell it where you are and it will direct you back to where you parked. You probably won’t need it much, but when you do, it’s useful.

For SSH, Pterm is the best one I’ve tried. For VNC, Jaadu is awesome, but very expensive. It’s the best one by a mile though.

The Weather Channel app is way better than the default weather app. Free too.

Fun apps are the NY Times crossword, WordWarp, and ParkingLot. Those are really the only games I play on it. Oh, and Tetris. Gotta have Tetris.

I also jailbreak, so I can have nagging alerts with Intelliscreen. I dare say that jailbreaking is worth it, if only because the jailbreak flashlight app is so much better and more usable than the ones in the app store. It cranks up the brightness to full, which makes the flashlight much brighter. Apple doesn’t let ‘legal’ app store apps mess with the brightness level.

Pandora - Streams music to your iPhone. Makes the iPod function almost superfluous.

Flashlight - I actually use this every morning to find my shoes. My wife appreciates that I don’t turn the light on.

Evernote - Free - I HIGHLY suggest people check out evernote. Brilliantly useful for remembering everything. Syncs with your desktop as well.

1Password - Used it to finally keep all my password stright and very secure. Seamlessly integrates with Safari on your desktop.

Bento - The app syncs seamlessly with your desktop version but you can also use it as a standalone since it allows you to make databses on the fly.

Cardstar - I use it to replace all those card tags on my keyring for discounts when shopping. Kroger Plus card, CVS pharmacy card, etc.
