Squirrel is surprise star of holiday photo

Melissa Brandts and her husband were surprised to find a squirrel posing with them in a photo taken on holiday.

The couple had set the timer on their camera while posing at a lakeside in a national park in Canada.

Just as they were about to be captured on camera the cheeky squirrel popped up in the foreground and stole the show.

The picture was taken at the side of the stunning Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Canada.

Mrs Brandts said: "We had our camera set up on some rocks and were getting ready to take the picture when this curious little ground squirrel appeared, became intrigued with the sound of the focusing camera and popped right into our shot."

The picture was submitted to the website of America's National Geographic magazine.

Uhhh. How do I put this? She’s not the FR type.

Yes, she knows how big this has become. My friend neighbor called her and Melissa said she’s the 100th person to call her today. We’re in a very conservative area for Minnesota, but they’re not conservatives. Nice enough people that keep to themselves nowadays for the most part. No 0bama signs ever in the yard, but she’s made her views known and has pretty much cut off contact with my friend. The husband’s a nice guy that remains neutral. Beautiful yard and a nice home. They lay pretty low around here.

Don't underestimate squirrels!

We put out a new, rather small bird feeder....it hooks onto a limb of a tree

Hardly any birds interested....

..but a local squirrel must think we put it there for him alone.

He visits it almost daily and greedily eats all the sunflower seeds...rapidly spitting the shells to the ground.

The way he accomplishes this is to literally hook his feet over the limb and lower his body upsidedown to the bird feeder and reach in and grab the seeds!!

It's hilarious.

The last house I lived in had 19 gray squirrels removed by an animal control guy .... they were cute and all, but destroyed my feeders and ate voraciously. I tolerate them at the feeders... and take the good with the bad. Which reminds me I have a squirrel-proof Droll Yankee bird feeder with a lifetime warranty and need to have the base replaced for the third time ..... they broke it again. LOL
