I know HBO probably isn't really looked upon to highly around here (love trueblood, enterouge)
But if anybody saw last night's stand up. As a conservative I have never felt more attacked in my life.
As usual we were all accused of being racist for opposing Sotomayor....i mean forget the fact that she actually uses race as motivation for her rulings and basically ignores the constitution....it has to be racist why we oppose her...
i mean lets all forget how the left treated Gonzelez under the Bush administration....that couldn't be racist...
As a half latin person i'm amazed at how I can be racist for opposing Sotomayor
and this brings me to a bigger question...as an entertainer why would you even try to offend at least half the country if not more ...shouldn't political jabs be a little more subtle...you are an entertainer and your only hurting yourself by alienating an audience
And I guess I understand now why Breitbart created Big Hollywood...if we are just straight up going to be attacked for who we are and lied about...we need to get our message out there because like it or not we can't allow us to be portrayed in the wrong way by a pretty large industry with a lot of influence....we must challenge these notions and stand up for what we truly believe in not allow fake distortions that create false templates that simply aren't true
George Lopez....I will no longer ever watch any of your shows your dead to me
I enjoy his tv show but after last night, I’ll never watch it again. He was already on my list because he had Hussein on a commerical for his show about a week or so ago. Yeah, I know, I was surprised but it was Hussein plugging the show, not a stunt double or making funny with a tape.
Last night, I started watching the HBO special and was excited it was from San Antonio, TX. Yeehaw! First thing out of his mouth was FU to all Texans for not voting for Sotomayor and then more choice words about us even having a border and we need illegals. Excuse me, but the people who paid his salary that night (other than HBO) was the audience of Texans he just cursed. I turned the tv off after 10 minutes and vowed he and his shows will never be seen in this house again.
Ok, what is up with all these hispanics and the ‘we don’t need borders’ crap? Geraldo? Lopez?
Why don’t they go to Mexico and try to make a living that they make here? Won’t happen!
Fine, if we don’t need borders, let’s invade Mexico and take the land. See how they like THAT. They’d be screaming IMPERIALISM to high heaven. I don’t know a liberal that isn’t a hypocrite.
I never cared for George Lopez. I’ve seen his bias before. Want a good hispanic comedian? I love Carlos Mencia. He gets it (the racial issue) and he’s hilarious.
I never blamed the church! I said they can’t rely solely on the church’s teachings to curb teen pregnancy.
Don’t be so sensitive!
He also steals jokes.
You’re right. Sorry.
Just not watching his shows is not good enough. I recommend you cut off the funding. I canceled my cable years ago and I recommend you do the same. Your money is paying for him to say what he did on HBO.
JoMa
No problem! So many jump on the church to blame for their own failings, it’s easy to do.
Sadly, that fact still stands... so many blame the church for their own failings.
cha-cha-cha
Did he steal one of yours? Since they're not copyrighted, I don't think it's illegal. Jay Leno did too, jokes are often written by others, they just have the ability to deliver.
You GOTTA STOP WATCHING THAT CRAP! Next thing you know, you’ll be voting Dimocrap.
It still isn’t something that should be encouraged. Other comedians work hard to come up with material. It may not be illegal but it is certainly unethical.
I saw most of it - same old hackneyed ethnic stand-up stuff practiced for years by black comedians. In George Lopez’s routine, the US is composed solely of white people and Hispanics. White people all live in Beverly Hills, their kids have names like “Dakota” and “Austin”, and they eat an exclusive diet of scones and mayonnaise. Hispanics are all extremely hard-working, they exclusively “do the work no one else wants to do”, their kids have the tough hard-scrabble upbringing that white kids lack, they are targeted for harrassment by the police but they are impervious to police weapons like bean-bags and pepper spray. Too many dumb cliches and stereotypes to easily remember and not particularly funny.
I don’t know what to say, you’re an Oklahoman so I have a certain amount of respect for your thought process just because of that, but I thought most comedians had someone write their jokes - like when they first started, they wrote their own material but when they got more famous, no one can think of so many funny things to keep up on material. I’m sorry if he stole material. I still like his attitude, makes fun of all races including his own.
Wow, he stole jokes from the racist George Lopez who stole it from someone else? I found this, apparently Mencia doesn’t hide stealing jokes.
“George Lopez has accused Mencia of plagiarizing his material. In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Lopez accused Mencia of plagiarizing 13 minutes of his material in Mencia’s HBO special. He also claimed he had a physical altercation with Mencia over the alleged plagiarism.[12] The only joke that Lopez has publicly specified was stolen and used on Mencia’s HBO special was a Taco Bell joke. Comedian Ted Sarnowski countered this claim, stating that the joke he performed on radio in 1988 was later taken and used without permission by Lopez, the radio station’s resident comic. Sarnowski claims to have given Mencia permission to use the joke, yet Lopez later began referring to Mencia as a “thief” over the joke Lopez allegedly plagiarized.[13][14][15]
Mencia has also been accused of stealing a routine from Bill Cosby. In his special, No Strings Attached, Mencia performs a bit about a father who spends years training his son for a career as a football player, only to see the son say “I love you, Mom!” at his moment of televised victory. Cosby performed a very similar bit in his concert film Bill Cosby: Himself and wrote briefly on the subject in his book Fatherhood. Mencia told the Los Angeles Times that he had never seen the film but regretted the similarities between his and Cosby’s jokes.[16]
Carlos Mencia’s accused plagiarism was also the butt of a few jokes in an April 2009 episode of South Park entitled “Fishsticks” where Carlos Mencia takes credit for a joke that somebody else had written. When faced with the prospect of being assaulted he admits “I took credit for it because I’m not actually funny!.... I just take jokes and repackage them with a Mexican accent!” He is later killed in the episode by Kanye West.[17]”
I saw the preview and that was enough. He talked about about how Hispanics were going to take over America and we’d better like it.
If you are talking about people like Jay Leno, then yes they have writers, but they also have to have new material every night. Mencia has writers for his TV show, but that isn’t what I’m referencing as stealing jokes, but his standup.
The guys still doing standup will perform the same routine for several months. George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock etc all write (wrote) their own jokes.
Another comedian known for stealing jokes is Dane Cook who blatantly stole several bits from Louis CK.
