Thanks, Chode; interesting and informative.
Regarding making engines more noisy? Fine, but what I miss it the ultra-high-pitched high-rev whine, not just the volume.
Hopefully F-1 knows this.

limited to three gearboxes per season If they're hybrids...why do they need a gearbox at all?

yup, back in the day the Ferrari’s had a ‘song’ where the Matra’s had a an honest to God shriek...
i don’t remember now if the Ferrari was a flat 12 at the time, the Matra was 60deg V, the exhausts prolly had something to do with it
couldn’t find a good example in an F1 but am pretty sure these had the same engines
skip to ~3:00min mark on either/both for a fair example

please, don't give them any ideas! a super fluid direct drive is prolly in the works
or even worse, en electric motor in each wheel all powered by the engine unit

Actually I think that is the actual bit of genius in a hybrid vehicle...completely eliminating the transmission.
Never mind 8 speed automatics or CVTs. You’ll never break a properly matched electric motor.
All a commercial hybrid needs is a couple of tractor trailer sized batteries to get it rolling from a stop, and an appropriate power plant to take it from there. If you had a 2L turbo (200HP) and substantial enough motors, it should be a formidable AWD unit.
And ska-rew all the gratuitous electronics and gimmickry.

i think that'd make a good series, and then let F1 go back to it's roots and dump all the

Well, actually I was talking about a production sedan or coupe.
I also liked the screaming 17,000 revs and manual gearboxes.

Thanks Chode!
I do enjoy listing to engines performing at their peak.
And for your listening pleasure (and shifting platforms to things aviation) consider the groundshaking, thunderous j-58s, j-79s, and F-110-400s all in full afterburner.

It’s very sad about Schumi. One wonders just how much he is aware of his condition.

watched the video and it seems Luca the attention whore is still trying to remain relevant rather than having some actual news on Schumi....

When you read doctor and medical papers on the type of injuries Michael received, the condition when he arrived at the hospital and the length of time in a coma, the outlook has never been very good. This is a very sad story to happen to anyone. All our prays go out to him and his family.
