FIA concludes Masi acted in ‘good faith’ as Abu Dhabi GP report is released

The FIA has concluded former Formula 1 race director Michael Masi acted in ‘good faith’ in his handling of last year’s controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

By: Jonathan Noble
Mar 19, 2022, 9:33 AM

Following the conclusion of a detailed report in to the finish to last year’s season finale, motor racing’s governing body published its conclusions on Saturday.

As well as revealing an executive summary of its investigation, the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council also endorsed its key findings – which suggested that the fault for what went wrong was prompted by poor regulations and procedural errors rather than any deliberate malice from Masi.

Key to the situation were Articles 48.12 and 48.13 of the F1 Sporting Regulations which detail the process of backmarkers unlapping themselves and the timing of a restart.

In its conclusions, the FIA said: “It was apparent from the analysis that there could be different interpretations of Article 48.12 and Article 48.13 of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, and that this likely contributed to the applied procedure.

“It was also considered that the decisions regarding the Safety Car at the end of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix likely took into account previous discussions that made clear the Formula 1 Stakeholders (FIA, Formula 1, Teams and Drivers) preference to end races under green flag racing conditions, rather than behind a safety car, when safe to do so.

“In combination with the objective to finish under green flag racing conditions applied throughout the 2021 season, the report finds that the Race Director was acting in good faith and to the best of his knowledge given the difficult circumstances, particularly acknowledging the significant time constraints for decisions to be made and the immense pressure being applied by the teams.”

While the mistakes made in Abu Dhabi have prompted calls for the results of the race to be overturned, the FIA is clear that the matter is now firmly closed.

It added: “The results of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the FIA Formula 1 World Championship are valid, final and cannot now be changed. “In accordance with the rules, Mercedes made a protest to the stewards after the race, seeking to change the race classification. The stewards dismissed the protest and Mercedes then had an opportunity to appeal that decision to the FIA International Court of Appeal, but did not do so.

“There are no other available mechanisms in the rules for amending the race classification.”

The FIA has replaced Masi for the 2022 season and made further changes to its procedures. This now includes the process of informing which backmarkers can overtake being automated.

“The process of identifying lapped cars has up until now been a manual one and human error lead to the fact that not all cars were allowed to un-lap themselves,” added the FIA.

“Due to the fact that manual interventions generally carry a higher risk of human error, software has been developed that will, from now on, automate the communication of the list of cars that must un-lap themselves.

“In addition, the 2022 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations have been recently updated to clarify that “all” and not “any” cars must be permitted to un-lap themselves.”

Likely because of blm pressure to do,so, or maybe the gay committing raised a stink about bias agaisnt Hamilton because he supports gay agenda. Lots of people succumb to pr3ssure from these two groups unfortunately. Not saying that is why they did, but it very well could be.

Good I’m glad they found that to be the case. I always felt he did nothing wrong considering the rules he had to follow. But of course blm and gay groups and ilk likely will scream about racism and a coverup in the decision.

Hopeful.y Hamilton loses it and storms off in a huff. He’s a pretty great racer, but he is Insufferable, and he and his ilk are turning f-1 woke, and ruining yet another great sport. All so,they can get their lousy 15 minutes of fame. They want recognition and don’t care if it ruins the entire sport or not- that is what I find so intolerable about him. He and people ike him won’t be happy until they ruin the sport for everyone but the few who are like-minded asth3y are. One sport after anohter has fsllen to this selfish nonsense, so,ill say again, i hope he with his arrogant selfish ‘me me me’ attitude storms off in a huff, for the sake of the sport.

No spoilers, but as I write this Q1 has just finished and Hamilton is way behind Ferrari and Red Bull.

Still have Q2 and Q3 to go, but things aren't looking great for sHamilton.

Good. I hope it stays that way. I don’t like rooting agaisnt folks really, but he just really irks me for the reasons in my last post. If,he’d just shut up,and drive, I wouldn’t have a,problem with him and would efen root, for him and others, but it’s the woke crap that has me fearful he and his ilk, will ruin that racing league as well.

Lol we have only 1 red-light too, and it blinks, it’s not even a full red light lol. When they first put it in, hardly anyone others to stop for it as they had been so used to not having to stop on that route. Cops got a lot,of folks when they put it in. Took awhile for folks to get used to stopping there.

Geezus, had F1 really degenerated into such a mess of rules?

Drivers are supposed to have all this in mind?

https://www.thedrive.com/accelerator/44995/las-vegas-f1-night-race-confirmed-for-2023-heres-the-track-map

It’s official, Formula 1 will hold a third race in the United States starting next year, and it will take place in Vegas, baby. F1 and Liberty Media confirmed Wednesday night that a deal had been reached with city officials and promoters, green-lighting the event starting in November 2023.

While no exact dates were divulged, it’s likely that the new American race will take place between the Mexican and Brazilian Grand Prix, meaning a very early November date is likely. Not doing so would place the race too close to Thanksgiving in the U.S., sandwiching it between Brazil and Abu Dhabi. Of course, these are my own projections and they’re solely based on the 2021 calendar.

What F1 did divulge, however, is that it will be a night race and it will take place on a Saturday, not a Sunday. The track layout will measure 3.8 miles from start to finish and feature 14 corners of various designs, including high-speed and one chicane.
F1

The design will reportedly allow F1 cars to reach speeds of over 212 mph, and while no other details were provided, the press release mentioned a race distance of 50 laps. That means a 190-mile race distance, which will likely take up every minute of the two-hour time limit set by the FIA.

One of the renderings shared by Liberty Media shows the track layout making its way through the famous Vegas Strip, before coming back around and weaving in and out of famous landmarks such as the Bellagio Hotel, The Venetian, Treasure Island, and more.

“This is an incredible moment for F1 that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sportwith a third race in the U.S.,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1. “Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, thrills, and of course, the famous Strip. There is no better place for Formula 1 to race than in the global entertainment capital of the world and we cannot wait to be here next year.”
F1

The track’s interaction with the popular hotels and casinos can be reflected in F1’s reported backing of the event, citing Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International, Wynn Las Vegas, The Venetian Resort, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, and Live Nation as race promoters and partners.

It’s evident that F1 management is chasing hot venues with strong entertainment potential, as is the case with Miami—and maybe Austin to a certain extent. Offering more than just racing seems to be Liberty Media’s MO, as it works overtime to expand F1’s viewership and draw new, younger fans into the sport whether it be via tv, online, or in person at races.

“Iconic Las Vegas and Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport, is the perfect marriage of speed and glamour,” said Greg Maffei, Liberty Media President and CEO in a press release.

It’s unclear just how long of a contract F1’s signed with the city and its promoters, leading us to believe that it may not be a very long one. Theoretically speaking, this deal could even be based on a one-time trial basis, considering how complex and costly it is to shut down Las Vegas’ (if not the country’s) most profitable street. Casinos love making money, and should F1 not turn out to be the moneymaker they’ve been promised, they likely won’t want to shut down the Strip a second time around.

Interesting.

One wonders what a hotel room with a view of the track might cost.

(I know, if you have to ask...)
